Ballmer reveals some 'slate' PCs, but does not thrill

There was quite a bit of anticipation that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would upstage Apple with an exciting new tablet design at his CES keynote last night, but it pretty much turned out to be a dud. After more than an hour of bobbing and weaving through several topics, and quickly skipping over Windows Mobile, Ballmer showed a prototype tablet from Hewlett-Packard and two other suppliers. They were running Windows 7 and looked a lot like other touchscreen prototypes we've seen, but none of them seemed to do anything special. You can see the tablet presentation over on YouTube.

What we really saw was Ballmer trying a pre-emptive strike against the probable appearance of an Apple tablet later this month. He even referred to 'slate' PCs, a bit of a swipe against the oft-reported Apple-owned iSlate name. I suppose this is better than Ballmer's 2007 interview where he dissed the iPhone when it launched. He's trying to get ahead of the curve, but his keynote got pretty ho-hum reviews and Microsoft really didn't show anything of interest. There was a buzz that Microsoft might show the Courier device it hinted at in September, but it didn't appear yesterday.

We don't know if Apple will reveal a tablet, although it seems pretty likely. Do you think Apple can trump Microsoft with a tablet and dominate the market as they have with the iPhone against Windows Mobile phones? Or has Microsoft learned their lessons by trying to be a little more pre-emptive with a tablet release?

Windows 7 made a video about it: “I’m on a TABLET!”

Can someone please make a remix of this? I love the "rolling in" movement at 1:42.

Not to be a dick, but you're the only one who's being a bias fanboy here, Jordan. You/we can say our opinions, but for God's sake stop bashing other's with a holier-than-thou attitude. It's childish and annoying as all hell to read.

It's not that the tablet product wasn't awe inspiring (it wasn't but that's not the point) but they could have at least tried to engage the audience with an professional presentation. It was like watching 1970 adult film actors delivering their line. Awkwardly scripted and stilted. And the whole time Balmer following around his co-presenters asking inane leading questions.

That CES keynote is the epitome of amateur hour.

What Microsoft is doing in all these years is putting the concept and user interface of Windows on other devces like a phone or a slate. They still don't understand that mobile devices need different interfaces. That's why these slates are going to fail, like Windows Mobile failed.

Did you see how fast he flipped through the pages on that book?? Wow, silky smooth! Personally, being able to read books "in full colour" does sound impressive - is that black *and* white?? Sounds pretty full ...

The concept photos of the Dell tablet look very interesting, and it's going to run Android. They (and NOT M$) appear to be paying attention to the want/need for elegant devices.

Ballmer is a troll. I know that's not very nice, but he is the most annoying spokesperson evvvvverrr!

At least on the computer-side, Microsoft is a software maker, while Apple makes hardware. Microsoft is pretty much stuck with what it's manufacturers make. Though I'm disappointed, but not surprised that there was no Win7Tablet addition.

I did notice that Engadget and everyone seemed to switch the lexicon from "tablet" to "slate" once the "iSlate" rumors started...Apple is setting trends even when it's not really doing anything(officially)!

Um, no.
The Slate name has been applied to the Tablet PC Form factor that lacks a keyboard for nigh on a decade now.
Convertible's refer to Tablet PC's with a swivelling screen and a keyboard.
Hybrid's are Convertible's with a detachable keyboard.

People have been calling the Apple tablet an iSlate because they're just attaching the Apple 'i' prefix to the already well established name for this particular form-factor.

Ok, first Ballmer looks like Peter Boyle playing the lead in Young Frankenstein.

Second their tablet PC's were probably thrown together in the last few months just to have something to present. They look like crap and are nothing more than a netbook with the keyboard removed and the screen flipped over.

The iMystery better be as thin as the iPhone for starters, play like an eBook, and play movies from multiple sources. Oh, and I'd love removable storage!
