OpenFeint announces version 2.4, now in Fieldrunners

Other improvements include a new geolocation leaderboard (so you can see where people are nabbing the high scores), and tweaks on other social features like the "presence" system, which features Xbox Live-style announcements when friends come on and offline while playing.
It's interesting how this sort of sub-culture is burgeoning simply inside individual games, completely unofficially, on the App Store. You have to wonder if Apple is watching any of this -- certainly there's a call from both devs and players for social connections like this, and it would be interesting to see a system that worked App Store-wide, perhaps even with current iTunes accounts. OpenFeint and the other folks working on their own social networks are doing a lot of interesting things already, but I have to wonder what it would be like if Apple got involved.

The guys over at OpenFeint have released version 2.4 of their social gaming platform, and they've also corralled one of the biggest games...

anyone know what game is shown in that picture at the top of the post?

You also can't enter a name for new local high scores; instead every entry is marked as "You". So much for competing against people in real life who play the game on your ipod. Having OpenFeint active slows down opening the app as it makes a connection.
It's a gimmick, and one that has more cons than pros in regards to its addition to Fieldrunners.
However, the additional maps in the Fieldrunners update are well worth it (even though they cost $1 each). I've gotten more hours of play out of Fieldrunners than any other game for the iPhone. I'd just rather have the old scoring system (and scores) back. This is the second time they've erased the scores because they were adapting to a new system.
As long as there's an easy way to turn this off for users who don't want it. If I go to play a game it's because I want to play the game, not chat with others playing the game. It so annoyed me when trying out one of the free Aurora Feint games, constantly seeing all these chats from other users scrolling along the bottom.

Jeez Mike, climb out of Apples a$$ for a minute will you?
I think it's a perfectly valid question.
obviously both devs and customers find open feint useful, but the problem is that it's not centralized.
itunes integration (with a public API) would make it so all game devs could use a common system...might even lead to the ability to "sync" your game progress across multiple devices...
i'm sure apple reads apple blogs and forums
