VP for France Telecom verifies Apple tablet on the way?

French tech blog Nowhereelse.fr had a scoop of sorts this morning.

It turns out that Stéphane Richard, VP of France Telecom, was interviewed by Europe 1's Jean Pierre Elkabbach today. During the interview, Elkabbach made a comment to Richard: "According to the weekly Le Point, (in) a few days your partner Apple will launch a Tablet with a webcam."

To that, Richard simply replied, "Oui." ("Yes")

Elkabbach, probably sensing that French television viewers would love to know if they'd be in line for the new device, continued: "Is it that Orange users will also benefit?" This is in reference to the Orange wireless brand in France.

The long, complicated answer from Richard: "Bien Sûr!" ("Of course!")

Our French is not the best, so it's impossible to verify the rest of the discussion or the context in which these comments were taken, but according to the translation of the Nowhere Else page, the tablet is to at least be announced (if not sold) by the end of the month. In addition, the blog reports that the tablet will have a webcam and videophone capability built-in.

Update: TUAW reader Florian translated parts of the video and sent this to us: "They [the customers] will benefit more easily with the webcam. It will indeed be transmitted from the image real time, we will update this [use] in a way that videophone has been a few years ago and is also the network size and network quality that we put in place to serve the French will allow the new uses to develop." While that translation obviously leaves a bit to be desired, it seems to be the source of the information about videophone capabilities.

The original video (in French) follows on Page 2 if you wish to translate for us and provide additional commentary.

THe first three minutes he talks about the crisis in France Telecom, which apparently is going through a series of employee suicides, due to stress and volatility of their jobs...
THen he says somehting that Orange and France Telecom will become one ? (not sure), but anyway they are discussing that this process has started.
He says about Google and other American companies, that they spend a lot in the "employee wellness" programs
then he mentions "Las Vegas" these days - is there any show or conference going on there??? (CES) :-)
He says that on their network in 2009, there were 23 billion SMS sent, 58% more than in the previous year... On Dec 31st they had 18000 SMS per second between midnight and 1 am, totalling 75 million SMS.

Only in Dec, they sold more than 200,000 iPhones, he says it's a "Formidable" phone. And that his company counted on the success of iPhone
THen they talk about the network and the fact that in France there were no incidents due to the increase in traffic, as opposed to AT&T in the US, which had to stop selling iPhones due to overloading of their network... (ha ha)

Then he asks about the Google smartphone, will it be a competitor for them? He says that no, it will be a competitor for Apple, Nokia, etc, but they will sell it as they sell any other phone. But he thinks that Apple has a definite advantage in this category.

THen after 6 min, he says that he heard that Apple is launching its Tablet (the other says "Yes), that will have a Webcam ("Yes" again), and he asks if the Orange subscribers will benefit from that... He says "Of course". THeir customers will be able to use the webcam in real time and their network will allow this to happen.
ANd then they talk about France Telecom and Orange (I think they are either one company, or they are merging), and about the fact that they want to create a good environment for their employees.
His #1 belief is - he does not have a #1 belief...
Then they talk about some "Google tax" - I did not understand thoroughly what it was but it has something to do with usage... I guess.
At the end they talk about a program that is backed by their President, to bring fiberoptics in all France, not only in big cities, so that all have access to such technology.

France Telecom and Orange are one company, orange is the ISP and cell phone company, France Telecom is taking care of the land lines.
The different names are there because several years ago France Telecom bought Orange.

Question was: rumour apple will be launching a tablet with a webcam

"of course, Orange customer will benefit from the web cam;
a video-phone; our network will be able to handle real-time video for our customers"

Which means it'll have more in common with the MacBook/MBP family than the iPhone, hardware-wise. ;)

I read the Le Monde article which a very serious and reliable news paper :

The Orange 's Boss said : Yes it could be used for visio conference !!!

Which means there is an webcam (isigth cam) integrated in it.

Anyway Apple still did not offically presented it so wait and see.
