Rumor: Apple tablet said to be "iPhone on steroids"

If there's anything consistently consistent about the purported Apple tablet, it's that it's said to be, in essence, a larger iPhone. Expanding on this, Boy Genius Report cites its "close Apple contact" that claims the device is "an iPhone on steroids."

Like its iPhone brethren, the tablet is said to sport an ARM processor, adding the caveat that the processor will be "incredibly fast." Also according to the report, the tablet will support multi-touch gestures that are said to be "out of control." Back in 2005, Apple acquired FingerWorks, a company that specialized in gesture-based computing. According to former Apple engineers, FingerWorks will have its footprint -- er, fingerprints -- on the purported tablet.

The meat behind these potatoes is said to be the iPhone OS kernel. For this reason, there hasn't been an updated build of the iPhone OS out of fears that tablet-related references in the code would leak.

Wondering if GEN 2 will be the one I bite. What's with the tablet being held up because they're waiting for two different display finishes? Glossy and Matte?

@SIP

Only nearly? Damn, if I'd known I was that close, I would have tried harder!

“May the new year fulfill all your reasonable requests vis a vis the iPhone. (Sorry, had to throw in the "reasonable", otherwise you'd be asking for realtime control of satellites, a built in phaser complete with "Stun" setting, and other things unthought of.)”

Brilliant! That nearly made me spew my orange juice all over my keyboard!

Well, IF the iPhone update is a matter of first introducing the tablet, then the wait won't be much longer.

Can't say I have all those problems with the phone, BUT I think my usage profile may vary greatly from yours. I don't game much, and don't have a lot of apps and all that.

May the new year fulfill all your reasonable requests vis a vis the iPhone. (Sorry, had to throw in the "reasonable", otherwise you'd be asking for realtime control of satellites, a built in phaser complete with "Stun" setting, and other things unthought of.)

As Foghorn Leghorn would say, "No no no, you're goin' about it all wrong, son!"

Apple doesn't want to keep the tablet a secret. How would you build hype that way? No, they WANT you to know that there's a tablet coming, and they want you to speculate about it, and keep those message boards humming. The only thing they don't want you to know are the actual details. Big difference!

As for the other tidbits in your post about "fixing things", and "breaking things", et cetera, I figure that you're a glass half empty kind of a fella, aren't ya? Reminds me of the remark "I can't help but notice that those who know how to do things perfectly aren't doing them."

This is like playing bingo by saying "I bet it'll be a number."

Even without steroids, the iPhone would have still made those homeruns.

Well, for me the idea of the Apple Tablet being just a bigger iPhone is pretty stupid.
The iPhone is great as it is. Of course with only a 10-inch screen, it can double as a reader.
The Apple Tablet should be a MacBook.
A MacBook that does the Wacom Cintiq- thang.
Maybe add phone capabilities... that would be interesting. You can do designs or text, spreadsheets as you are talking to a client on the phone while waiting for a flight or at the dentist office.
But a bigger-than-10-inch screen would probably be needed.
