Rumor: Tablet delays iPhone updates

With Apple's rumored media event only two weeks away, people are hopeful that it'll bring an announcement of the tablet. Could it be that the next iPhone OS update is also waiting for that event?

iPodNN quotes a source who suggests that the next version of the iPhone OS is laden with references to its forthcoming sibling, and therefore must wait until the tablet is made public. Last month, The Boy Genius Report pointed out alleged evidence of iPhone firmware 3.1.3 and 4.0 in private testing, which is likely, but these builds have not yet been made available to developers or the public.

Just this week, Boy Genius suggested that the tablet is a sort of "iPhone on steroids," that is to say, a larger and more tricked-out version of the little guy. At the same time, John Gruber relayed one of those "friend-of-a-friend" tales suggesting that the iPhone is actually a by-product of the device they originally intended to build. Only now has the technology caught up to allow for the tablet's existence.

Oh what a tangled web we weave...

The key here s VOIP via a 3G device with a Bluetooh-3 human interface. The iPad will sep forward to recapture the educational & e-book market for Apple. This is SJ' vision.

What's the shortest amount of time in which apple has announced an event? I mean if it's only two weeks till that rumored event, shouldn't invitations or the announcement have gone out already?

Mac OS X core and iPhone OS already share over 80% of the same source code. With enough CPU speed and memory, you could easily have an ARM-based Mac and 100% of OS X (to go along with PowerPC and Intel-based Macs of old).

To be honest guys I don't think this tablet will delay any updates, let's say that apple has iPhone software (3.2) and (4.0) testing in private hands, (not 3.1.3)

Because if Apple wanted to update its software due to a bug or something, it could go from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 without revealing anything, it will just start with 3.1.2 as a base and work on it, then apply it to 3.1.3 and release it, and keep 3.2 unreleased until the tablet is announced, where it might show some hidden information, also a beta 4.0 could be out, but thats for later on...

Yeah, was really hoping for a 10" netbook form factor. I still tote my 12" Albook as I'm not yet sold on current hacintosh netbooks. They look great, but I want true apple hardware.

Yeah I couldn't help notice that we've been on 3.1.2 for a very long while. There are certain issues. (Wifi related) that i was hoping that would be fixed in the next update. And so far, waiting...

Although id would be very nice to get some Tablet news and iphone OS beyond 3.1.2 news.at the same time.

I was really hoping the tablet was going to be a full-featured Mac as opposed to an overgrown iPhone. The whole reason the iPhone is nice is because the OS is tailored to the form factor, and the finger touch idiom.

A tablet with (gasp!) a stylus would be theoretically large enough to support a Mac OS-based platform and it would be nice to interact with Mac apps by touch.

I think that's quite obvious at this point.

I think you guys need a "without tablet" version of the site as well as the iPhone one - I can't wait for it but the number of rumours are off-putting :)
