Final Fantasy I and II coming to iPhone and iPod touch

Just announced at Square Enix's Facebook page: Final Fantasy I and II are coming to an App Store near you. The nearly 20-year-old games have been remastered and re-released a number of times, with versions appearing for just about every platform invented thus far, so it was only a matter of time before they made their way to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Release date and pricing are both TBA, and nothing official has been announced on Square Enix's official site as of yet, but in the meantime, they've posted screenshots, and they look quite excellent. With Final Fantasy XIII coming out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March, going all the way back to the long-running series' beginning on the iPhone sounds like a really fun way to pass the next couple of months.

Thanks to reader Paul M., Jr. for the tip!

Nice! I wonder when they'll distribute resources to build that remake of Final Fantasy VII! I want that cyberpunk look!

This is great news, as long as they don't try charging in the region of $10 for it. I'm sick of all those Mafia games clogging up the RPG section of the App Store. Those aren't RPGs, they're text-based browser games given a new GUI.
Hopefully, they'll release all 6 of the 2D Final Fantasy games eventually. Especially 4, my personal favourite of the 2D part of the series.

So say we all. If they're bringing the GBA/PSP version of I and II to the iPhone, there's no reason that IV, V, and VI couldn't be ported as well.

These look like the PSP versions of the games, which retailed for $29.99 on the system when released. $10 doesn't seem unreasonable given that.

And I just got a copy of the original Nintendo Power Player's Guide for FF1, so I'm interested to see how that holds up with the new graphics.

Sometimes I think Square will not be satisfied until Final Fantasy I is playable on every single electronic device known to man.

Finally! Hopefully this means Square is going step up their game and start releasing all of their legendary titles. The new touch interface looks great too!
