Firefox 3.6 now available

Head on over to Getfirefox.com, Firefox fans. Version 3.6 of your favorite browser is now ready. The video explains the major changes in this version, but here are the highlights.
  1. One-click themes. Using the Personas Gallery, you can assign a new look and theme to Firefox with a click. The way it works couldn't be simpler. Roll over any theme to preview it and click to commit. I found most of them annoying, but I'm old and crotchety.
  2. Out-of-date plugin warnings. This super-handy feature lets you know when you've got an out-of-date and potentially virus-friendly plugin installed and provides an update link.
  3. Speed! This version promises improved speed with javascript, rendering and startup.
There's more, of course, so watch the video above. Or better yet, grab a copy and start playing. In my extremely limited testing, content heavy pages did seem to load quicker (I typically visit StarWars.com), and all of my plugins continued to work. If you experience any issues or have a plugin that refuses to work, please let us (and your fellow Firefox users) know.

The Mac beta became available last year on Halloween (spooky) and the final release candidate dropped on January 11, 2009.

Every time I see a new version of Firefox announced, I open Firefox (which I use seldom otherwise) to download it, figuring that's only polite. But, unlike other browsers (e.g. Camino), Firefox doesn't seem to know about its own updates. It doesn't announce an update when it's opened, and when I select "Check for Updates..." in the Help menu, it tells me, "There are no updates available. Firefox will check periodically for updates." I actually have to hunt through the Mozilla site to find the new Firefox.

Apparently some right hand is not telling some left hand what it's doing? Not exactly very impressive. The close buttons on the right don't charm me either; it's still a Windoze port.

I hope they've fixed the memory leaks that start to show after about three hours use. Firefox is a memory hog.

Also, I wish that the themes weren't created by monkeys and teenage matrix-geeks.

I dumped Safari a long time ago for Firefox and it's extension support. The last few weeks though, I've been using Google Chrome with several of my favorite extensions. It took all of about a week for me to remove Firefox from my Dock. The only extension I need that isn't available for Chrome is 1Password.

I was a staunch Safari man but in the last few days I've started using Chrome on the Mac and it's now my preferred browser.
