And the winner for the first tablet software announcement is...

It had to happen. Somebody had to be the first to announce software for a still-nonexistent piece of hardware.

A lot of us in the business of reporting Apple news and rumors were waiting for the shoe to drop on tablet-related software announcements. Sure enough, developer Ben Gottlieb has taken the bold step of announcing an "iPad" (please let that not be the name...) app in development.

Gottlieb's Stand Alone, Inc. announced today that they're working on a larger version of their popular Crosswords iPhone app. As Gottlieb mentioned, "The main constraint in developing a Crossword app for mobile devices has been the distinct lack of screen real estate. We have been anticipating the Apple tablet as the greatest piece of hardware for App developers since iPhone itself, and Crosswords will be even better on the new device."

So there you have it! A piece of history, right in front of your eyes -- the first software announcement for Apple's tablet device, which hasn't even been officially confirmed yet, and (technically) may not even exist at all. The price and availability of the app were not included in the announcement, but really, let's not sweat the details, shall we?

Hey, for what it's worth, "iPad" is a lot less stupid than "iSlate."

Great news! Standalone's Crosswords is my favorite app on the iPhone. I do a few crossword puzzles each day with it. If their tablet app is as good as their iPhone app, I'll be very happy! : )

Big news... every developer working on 'tablet' version of their software, or at least preparing it... me too :) www.tridrops.com, but it's nothing to release until device appears, surely will be new sdk, bigger screen and so on... I can even say, I'm working on software for unreleased 3D laser 'star wars' type projector :D so... ?

McGraw-Hill won't be mentioned in the keynote tomorrow, for sure. Steve removed all traces of ATI and their new Radeon-for-Mac years ago, from his keynote and at the Apple booth at MacWorld SF. Just because an ATI press kit went out, two days before the keynote, with info about new Radeon graphics cards being available in warmed-over Mac models.

Steve stopped talking to any ATI employees, Apple immediately began shipping systems with Nvidia graphics cards, and Apple stopped actively promoting any ATI products. The Apple - ATI relationship never recovered from that.

The Apple Tablet Device could potentially be far more important to Apple (and the rest of the computing, information, and entertainment industries). So spilling the beans could be a deal-breaker for McGraw-Hill. Maybe Mr. McGraw didn't read the NDA. Nice job while it lasted, huh, buddy?

There is a new rumor of a 500GB version of the iPad.

This new super data absorbent version will be the MAXiPad...

I'm going to start telling people I'm developing apps for a non-existant piece of hardware and see if they'll go for it. How do we know that's not what these guys are doing?
