Apple shifts focus from sales to quality in China
There was quite a bit of discussion from Apple yesterday about their sales in China (you can see that in our liveblog from yesterday afternoon), and AppleInsider points out that Apple is changing priorities over there, from straight up sales to brand quality. Tim Cook said yesterday that Apple has activated more than 200,000 iPhones since the release in China last year, and only in relation to the iPhone can anyone think that number could have been better. Apple is behind the pack in China -- there are a significant number of competitors over there, and unlike the market in the West, multifunctional smartphones have been popular for a long time already. But Apple recognizes the potential overseas, and Cook says the company does "...realize we must do well in these markets to continue to grow."
What changes can they make? Price for one -- Apple says that as a premium brand, they're going to have to tweak a little bit to fit into the lower-income middle class in China while still competing on user experience. Apple didn't say that they weren't happy with what's happening in China, but compared to other countries in Asia (Japan came out of last quarter with a 400% year-over-year growth), Apple has a little more work to do there.

Have you ever been to China?
I live here, and have done for more than 15 years.
The reason iPhone sales are sucky here is that the grey market supplies the same phone, and for cheaper in some cases.
So choices are - phone with no wifi, and locked to the crappy carrier.
Or buy one grey market.
Guess what most people choose.
Current stats for iPhones on China Telecom are in the 2 million user range.
Remember folks, HK has sold more iPhones than people living in the territory. Those phones are going somewhere... and that somewhere is the mainland.
You guys don't get it. Has any of you been to china? Have you guys seen a phone manufactured from there? Take Nokia for instance. They have cameras on the front of their phones for web conferencing. They've had touchscreen phones with full web browsing and the ability to tether via bluetooth 3 years before the Apple iPhone was invented. My God, their data coverage exceeds that of any carrier in the US. Pay attention to the iPhone. Americans are not very tech savvy. It Shows. Apples eases of use is very appealing to the ignorant state of mind that the average american persists to be in. The iPhone is an iPod touch that does phone calls for an expensive price. Why would any want to buy a $700.00 phone when they can get a Nokia that has way more features for less then half the price over there. Low income? For places in asia that are outsourced to actually manufacture and create these device you'd think they'd get a little discount in some area. No! Apple can be a very greedy company and maybe that marketing bullshit works out here in the US but maybe they should of done their research. I mean come on, the most prosperous technologies derived from Asia, its not rocket science. Did they actually think ease of use will be there selling point for a limited device? Fuck it, people want the latest and greatest. Majority of Apples consumers are geeks and fanboys/girls who love their products and creating mods out of them. Thats why 10% of the jailbreaking community are getting more out of this piece of shit device than the 90% of the ignorant, simple minded fucks and sobs who only use it to make calls and touch the screen.

Yeah right.
Apple sells the iphone in Brazil for as much as an used car, and that's with a 2-year contract. Actually, it costs more or less the same of a macbook there, which is the most expensive in the world.
Way to go, Apple
Apple should fire China and instead make their stuff in Japan where they actually take quality control personally. Although, on a sad note, they would have to jack their prices even higher than they already are.
January 27 2010 at 1:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOnce upon a time, Japan was known for making shitty quality items, much like china has become now.
January 27 2010 at 3:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'd imagine that they have to be a cost competitor in China since there is a lot of quality competition. Once more developers get on board with Chinese language apps and games it'll draw more people in. Out of all the phones out there I'm sure the iPhone has the most to offer, they just need to get that message across.
