It's finally here. At their event in San Francisco, Apple has officially announced their tablet computer, which they're calling the iPad....

Where's the "just one more thing"? Did I miss something or did the expected announcements of 3 or 4 new products or software releases all just turn into 1, the iPad? I was hoping for an announcement about a refresh on the MacBook Pro line (new processors) and iWork '09 is a bit dated now that it's 2010.

Ipod was not great because we don't have pockets in many of our clothes. The clip-on was better but interface makes it a bit harder.
Thanks Apple.
hat's it? I have been loyal for years, but I gotta say I'm wavering...maybe I have given enough $ to Apple and it's time to move on (to what I don't know, but they aren't the bees knees anymore IMO).
One thing that really irks me is the continued partnership with AT&T. I'm not saying that Verizon or any other carrier would be better, but I have the iPhone and find just to many holes, dropped calls, or inability to make a call or connect to the internet...in downtown Chicago! And why would I pay another $15-$30 to AT&T for what I consider to be this substandard service? IF I was even to begin to consider this product, just because I have $$$ to pour down the toilet, then IN THE LEAST there should be a better pricing plan for those who already have an iPhone. I refuse to pay double when really I'd only be using one or the other at any given time anyway.
If this is the revolutionary product that is the most important thing Steve has ever done (or something to that effect to which it has been alluded), then I am seriously wondering if Apple will leave me anything else to ever look forward to again...
Looks pretty cool, but I would have no use for it.

* No SD card slot
* No USB or firewire port
* No video camera (or regular camera)
* No multitasking
* No full OS
* 64 GB max? Are you kidding me? That still won't hold all my music.
The whole point of developing a NEW product is to provide customers with a new experience. There is nothing new about any of this.
They'll add those types of things later. This is what Apple does....they release a product that's pretty bare-bones, and then slowly add in features. Rather than getting a flood of initial customers and then a slow trickle later on, they reel in the hard-core fans and then set up a steady stream of new buyers with each revision.

I used it for awhile, just to try it out for music, but quickly stopped using it when i got an iPod. This does not belong on a list of why the iPad is not revolutionary.
I agree that 64 GB is pretty small - Apple would have to make my entire iTunes library easily available for streaming in order to be sufficient. Was LaLa supposed to somehow come into play here? Even so, they would probably only stream my purchased content, not all the CDs I've owned & ripped.
Can't really care about the lack of a camera - maybe I'm not sociable enough to miss it for iChat purposes.
I agree that USB would be nice so that I could transfer a few small files to another computer, but I've gotten along fine on my iPhone without it.
It's understandable that you might want a traditional "full OS", but because this has potential to be revolutionary, we might have to put our traditional thinking behind us. The average schmoe wants to forget that an OS even exists.
Wholly unimpressed, underwhelmed. I love it for web surfing ($300 device) but Apple wants it to be so much more.
With a 1GHz processor I would expect multi-tasking and Flash.
For the power and size I would have expected a USB port for web cams and external hard drives. 64GB is not enough to bring a decent movie catalog of movies while traveling, the resolution is too high and the movie files would be huge! I currently compress movies to iphone's native resolution and I can have almost 70 different movies to watch, I don't have to sync but once a month.
With this power, it should not need an additional computer running iTunes to sync it, it should be able to sync itself!
That capability is just a sw upgrade, by selling yet ANOTHER accessory, they could make a 30pin connector to USB receiver to allow the iPad to drive the portable hard drives or webcams.
It's pathetic that it doesn't have this and that the capacities are so low for what they're trying to make out of this thing. iWork, really?
Also, it's very uncommon for Apple to have 6 different models, they'll cut that really fast and just sell 3G models really soon! I like the idea of prepaid data for when I'm traveling, so it's worth it to me to get the 3G over the wifi only... Wifi only models will be history before 2011, just like the 4GB iPhone was eliminated.
I also hoped to see handwriting recognition... Seriously a MAJOR need for all tablets, especially if they want this in academic settings, it's often too difficult to take notes by typing, especially for math intensive courses (they're engineers after all, don't the need to scribble ideas, block diagrams, algorithms, etc!?!?)
maybe I'll get an iPad in 2012 when they finally figure it out (like the simple gps upgrade from the first gen iPhone).
Until I see larger capacities, peripheral controls, multitasking, Flash for web browsing and handwriting (yes, I'll use a stylus), etc, I just don't think it's worth $850 or so for a large screen MID/PMP.
And I'm not a troll, I absolutely love my iPhone 3GS and I'm saving up for a Macbook Pro when I need to replace my Dell laptop. I just feel letdown by the iPad, it's not a game changer in anyway!
Watching movies on a 9"? Ehhh, it's either really convenient (PMPs and iPhone) or it's on my 42" HDTV, anything between just isn't convenient.
Again, the 16GB wifi only should be around 300 because it'll only be used as a web browser for the couch... I'd spend $300 today for it.
I guess I am one of those that are not impressed. First, the name. iPAD, seriously? Sounds like Apple is now making hygiene products. The fact that it is basically an oversized iPhone doesn't want me to run out and order one either. Now, toss in silly things like iBooks, I guess a lot of people have not heard of the library where you can get the books for free. For the first time in a long time, this is an Apple product that not only left me disappointed but there isn't a single thing that makes me want to buy one.
