Apple's official iPad video, specs page

Apple has updated their website with all kinds of fun iPad information, including an official specs page and the video that was shown at the end of today's event. The thing looks just plain beautiful, but then again this is basically their first ad for the "magical and revolutionary" device, so you'd expect that. You can find screenshots of all the different apps, and see folks like Johnny Ive and Scott Forstall chatting about how awesome it was to work on something so "unbelievable."

Interesting things to note on the official stats page: no camera at all, no Flash support, and while they did talk about a month-long standby battery life this morning, it's not actually listed on the stats page (probably because they can't be certain of which month you're talking about). Also interesting that there are a total of four buttons and controls on the entire device, and the only connector looks to be the dock. We've got to give it to Apple -- even though we haven't been able to touch it in person yet, this is a pretty amazing computer.

Question:

will we be able to use GPS bleutooth modules? If that is the case I see huge possibilities as a navigator. in a car of on a boat.

I, like many of you, am also completely underwhelmed by the device. I was expecting so much more from this device. It had nothing to do with the rumors, but with my knowledge of how well Apple does their products. I don't know about you, but this device seems rushed. My biggest issues with the device are:

1. No multi-tasking: Without this most basic feature, this device will not be worth me purchasing. Sure, it has a "cool" touch screen and all of that jazz, but if I cannot have more than one application running at the same time, this gains me nothing over my $300 Netbook.

2. No Flash: While there are many of you who hate flash (I hate it to), there are several sites that I access on a regular basic that require flash to access the site (one, for example, is XM Radio... You can't access your customer account without it). Further, from my wife's perspective, the only thing she does on our netbook today is play flash games. No flash means it's a hard sell for either of us.

3. No third-party tools, such as Java: While I'm probably on the unique end here, I would have loved to have been able to put something such as Java on this device. The reason is due to me considering this device as a quick access portal to some of the things that I do at work. Many of the systems that I control have Java-based web apps that allow for me to control those devices. It would have been nice to use this device to be able to do some of that.

4. No CDMA version: I like the fact that the 3G offerings are fully unlocked with AT&T offering a prepaid version of their service. What I don't like is that AT&T is the only 3G carrier that the device will support in the US (it will not run on T-mobile's 1700MHz 3G Network. Only their Edge). Further, I prefer Verizon. So, without a CDMA version, I'm stuck to just using AT&T, which I have stated that I would never do again until they cleaned up and enhanced their network quite a bit.

While the iPad did meet my pricing expectations, the fact that I can't have items 1-3 means that I don't gain anything over my existing netbook today. So, I will sadly not be purchasing one. I can't justify spending the money on something that doesn't do everything that I want.

can someone direct me to the source of the comment "the 3g model has GPS". Does this mean 3g triangulation, or a real satellite receiver gps like in the iphone 3g+3gs?

I'm asking because this thing would make the most awesome dashboard GPS ever once someone makes a car mount for it!!!

It's assisted GPS, according to the "official specs page" link atop this article (click on 'tech specs' in the top navbar when you get there).

...and still no Flash! Can you believe it! Are they just afraid people won't by apps any more? They will!

Support the campaign to get flash on the iPhone & iPad with one of these funky t-shirts (there are also mugs and other stuff after the link!)

As I said, I love toys and will probably buy at least the baby model. Fun only, unless ...

I'm interested to see how the Calendar app works in the larger format. If it was nearly as easy to use as a month-at-a-glance in terms of navigation and data entry, then I might be able to justify carrying it around.

First time posting here...
Incredibly underwhelmed. I've owned a lot of stuff from Apple including iMac, MBP, AppleTV and currently own an iPhone. I can easily say that this is the one device that I just cannot see purchasing for any reason.
The device may seem great from a 30,000ft view, but once you dig deeper, it's a huge let-down:
* I own a dSLR and have been looking for a great elegant way for off-loading images and video (I have a Canon 7D) onto a storage solution instead of getting more CF cards. With no CF slot or adapter in sight, I keep looking elsewhere.
* iWork looks great, sure. But try actually working in it on the iPad. The features are going to be pared down and typing documents on a glass screen laying flat on a desk while you're hunched over is not the answer. USB keyboard you say? Kinda defeats the purpose, no? Also, are iWork documents synced back to the Mac so you can actually work on them there? Even if they are, Windows users are SOL.
* iBooks looks interesting but with only a 10 hour battery and the agitations from looking at a full color bright screen will limit its functionality, especially when you consider that you will likely have drained that battery doing other functions.
* No multitasking!! Seriously, how is Apple still getting away with this?! WinMo phones have had this for years! This is supposed to be a device I can lounge away with right? Well guess what Apple, sometimes I like listening to Pandora while surfing the web! I don't care how powerful they think their new processor is - if it's incapable of multitasking, we're back to Pentium 1.
* No Flash. While this isn't a huge issue on the iPhone, it's a huge disappointment in the iPad. I'd love to be able to watch Hulu or stream Netflix on my wifi enabled flights. But nooooo.
* No microphone, no phone, no camera (not even stills), and 3G required for GPS. Hey guess what, the iPhone has all of those.
* The UI. Let's take the iPhone, stretch the hell out of it, and tell people that we've been working on it for years. Hey Apple, playing stretch armstrong with an iPhone doesn't mean that the UI is going to take care of itself! They had so much room for opportunity here and all they did is throw in a background and pretty up the email app?

There are so many more reasons why I just can't stand behind this product. I was ready to shell out cash for a product that was supposed to be revolutionary but instead I can't find a single reason to buy it. I just wouldn't use it. I wouldn't lounge with it - that's what I have a TV or an iPhone for. I wouldn't use it for work - that's what I have an iPhone or laptop for. I wouldn't use it for reading books because, well, I value my vision.

The deal-breaker for me is no obvious way to hook up external storage. The time when I want this the most is when I'm on an airplane, and I want to be able to choose from my large (>100gb) iTunes collection, work through and refer to my 25gb of email archives, as well as my 40gb project archives.

For me, the lack of a camera is A Good Thing, cameras get me into trouble most places I'd want to carry this.

Finally, I want EMACS on it for note-taking and other real work that isn't document/word-processing/formatting oriented.

Other than that, this is quite cool!

"this is a pretty amazing computer."

Are you kidding? The only thing amazing about the iPad is the amount of hype that was generated for over a year only to have Jobs unveil what basically amounts to a large iPod Touch. The fact that this device does not have a built-in web cam, multitasking, and USB in the first version is unacceptable. Has everyone been so blinded by "Apple Fever" that they cannot recognize that Apple really missed the mark on this product? Apple had the chance to build something really innovative and useful and they blew it. Yes, the brainwashed will say that the features I mention will be incorporated in future versions. But why should you have to wait and pay for another device to have basic features that are already found in a $300 netbook?

Okay...So far I've read somewhat conflicting accounts on this...By most accounts, it doesn't support multi-tasking, then another blog I read implied if they're native Apple Apps (i.e. iTunes, iBooks) you can run them simultaneously. It would be nice to have the option of listening to iTunes while reading a book. Anyone know if this is possible?

I can use my the iPod app on my 3GS while using other native apps so I would assume it would work the same way on the iPad.

it works similar to the iphone where you can play music on the iPod and still load other apps without the music shutting off or where you can be on a phone call and still access other applications. The iPod and Phone are all native apps. But if you loaded Pandora and were playing music and then went to Mail, Pandora would shut down as it is not a native app. Multitasking is only supported for native applications.
