iPad pricing starting at $499, available in 60-90 days
Well, the pundits were wrong when they thought the iPad would cost $999.Apple announced that the pricing for the device will start at $499 for a Wi-Fi only 16 GB model, going up to $599 for a 32 GB model and $699 for the top-of-the-line 64 GB device.
For $130 more to each of those prices, you'll be able to add pay-as-you-go 3G capabilities to the iPad, which puts the most expensive iPad at a price of only $829. All 3G capabilities are unlocked, although Apple has secured a $29.99 unlimited pay-as-you-go monthly deal with AT&T if you want that.
Availability for the Wi-Fi iPads is 60 days, 90 days for the 3G models, with international deals on 3G coming soon after that.

My guess as to no camera is that they want to sell to the US Government in big numbers for "secure" applications in facilities cameras are not allowed in, as well as some enterprises with similar restrictions. It just makes a market for the 3rd party dock with camera, swivel mount, and hard drive and USB ports.
As to video, nothing says that video at the dock connector might not be 1080p capable with later firmware.

Don't forget the 3G version also includes GPS. GPS might be more important than the 3G capability for many Apps. So that $130 extra includes not just a micro SIM socket and 3G modem set, but a GPS setup as well. Hopefull A-GPS ala the 3G and 3GS iPhone so that cell service is not required, unlike the other crippled variety of A-GPS that uses cell services to offload computes as well.
Everyone is so angry about no flash. But i don't find myself using flash a lot. Most of the times it's just a frustration.

If this did not have an apple stamp on it, and was based on android I think it would have slipped under the radar for most people.
Only thing i was hoping for was a higher resolution screen and hdmi output pushing 1080p or at the very least 720p. I still do not understand why apple has limited the output to 576p when for under 100$ I can get a pmp that pushes 720p or 1080p.
If XBMC gets jailbroken on it I may be more interested.
Underwhelmed is the understatement of the year

January 27 2010 at 4:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUnless there's an attachment available asap to link the phone to the ipad then sadly I will have to pass on it... I have an external terabyte drive that needs a usb plug in also... Why can't they put atleast 2 on it and put Flash on the damn thing? I can live without the camera and multitasking as long as I could use my external drive to get all my itunes stuff off of and sync it to my phone...
January 27 2010 at 4:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou want to attach it to your external drive and sync it to your iphone? Sure, if you'd just step over here I'd like to show you Apple's line of MacBook products. You can do everything you are asking for on these, though they are a little bit more money. Though, if you'd like to be a little more "mobile" and not have to deal with those nasty cables running from each device, may I suggest this iPad.

January 27 2010 at 9:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI believe this is aimed at the new user that wants digital content, i.e eBooks, vids, mags, music not someone who needs the full power of a laptop.
It will fit a particular growing market well.
I think this will be a better computer for my senior parents than a netbook or laptop... I want one but I can't really justify it. I have a Macbook Pro, Intel Mac mini media center, G4 Mac mini "random stuff" center, and an iPhone.... (and 2 dormant Think Pads and a dormant G3 Mac Book - too bad I can't put the iPad OS on the G3 or G4)
These are my initial questions - will Apple allow the Kindle app on the iPad. Will AT&T let me use my iPhone data plan on the iPad, or will I have to pay for a second plan?
I think the biggest misconception people are having is that the iPad is supposed to replace something, but its not. If you wanna talk on you talk on a phone use a phone. If you need to do processor intensive computer work, use a desktop or a powerful laptop. But if you wanna do casual internet browsing or movie watching or read an ebook than this is your machine. Sure, a front facing camera would have been great for video chatting (and the occasional cyber-sex) but if you want that wait for the eventual "Apple upgrade scam" they always pull.
I currently use a Dell Mini as my primary computer. It does everything I need it to, which is basically surf the web and convert audio files. I see the iPad as my "one size fits all" device for all of my casual computing needs. I can afford an iPad, and I think most working adults can too even though alot of people will complain about the price. I'll still use my Mini to covert my audio files and do downloads. But when I wanna surf the web, Ill use the iPad. When I wanna read ebooks and comics (When either Apple or the jailbreak community sees fit) ill use the iPad. When I wanna do a little dig-art, ill use the iPad. I don't need it to replace anything. I just want it. I work everyday so I can buy stuff I want, not necessarily need.
99% correct but disagree with the camera as not needed otherwise it could hit macbook sales which is why they left it out perhaps. They seek to differentiate the product line and make sure the price gaps are there. In fact we should all be amazed at the starting price and the options and the fact that it'll be unlocked for the 3G versions yipeee!!
January 27 2010 at 3:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne other thing. I think previous attempts at tablet computers failed because they attempted to put desktop OS's on them (or crappy WinMo!). That doesn't work very well. Sure Apple could have put a different OS on the iPad, but why would they when this thing is based on multitouch and they already have a multitouch OS. Snow Leopard (or whatever OS is on Mac now) is not designed for touch. I would have loved if the iPad was a more open system, but the fact is touch enabled programs are in their infancy and having a structured, closed OS is still probably the way to go to ensure quality. If tablets become a viable product, then I believe we will see a truly open Apple tablet.
