iPhone apps will run on the iPad

With today's announcement of the iPad, we heard about a new SDK for developing apps. We also heard, though, that the iPad will be capable of running all current iPhone apps without modification, downloaded straight onto the tablet from a built-in App Store. Either you can run apps normal sized on the larger screen, or, using pixel-doubling, iPhone-native apps can run full screen on the iPad. Apple has already rewritten all of their own apps using the new SDK (which will be available for download today on Apple.com), and I'm sure we'll start seeing tablet-driven development from iPhone developers immediately. A few companies, including EA, Gameloft, and the New York Times, have already gotten a head start on iPad development and showed off a few apps in the event earlier today.

While graphics-based iPhone apps are probably going to look pretty decent on the tablet, text-based applications look a little awkward when it's just bigger text. Native apps are going to be a must to really make this platform work, and I'm looking forward to seeing what current (and new) developers do with the new screen size and format.

Wait, the picture above shows the homescreen flipped horizontally... so will the homescreen be able to support this? Where is the picture from?

Like the iPhone, this gizmo would be more useful if it could access network printers. Content could be blocked or selectively unlocked for authorized printouts of emails, e-pub items such as recipes, and so on. Developers -- you have been handed a challenge!

I think it is worth noting that the iPad will *not* run every app. Even Steve said it during the keynote when he address apps for the second time. He said "almost every app" and of course that makes sense given that a lot of apps are designed for the phone and camera hardware of the iPhone which the iPad does not have. Just wanted to clarify that because you know someone will jump up and down and complain loudly, the first time he tries out his iPad and his "I'veTheBiggestCam" app fails to work...

I do not think that the iPhone apps will be worth loading on to the device. I would wait until the actual full on iPad apps come out. I also can't stress enough how bad of a name iPad is.

tbh im really not too impressed with what apple have produced here. i was kinda hoping for a macbook touch or something not a hybrid laptop/iphone thing. However when some guy hacks/jailbreaks the iPad a couple of hours after its released... i think i may change my mind : )

I want to know where the camera is. How could they release such a revolutionary device without a camera. No skype mobile or anything like that it seems. What a let down! Everything else about it is great but the camera is a deal killer for me.

How? Very easily. When was the last time a tablet computer had a camera? When are you going to be on your couch with this thing and suddenly need to take a snapshot with a slate? I am all for adding as many things as possible, but if they kept it out to keep cost down. Then all the better. They easily could have charged $800 base for this.. but they didn't. So kudos to apple for that.

Do I have to buy duplicates of my iphone apps to run on the iPad, or will the iphone apps come over from iTunes when I synch for the first time?

Will the ipad screen be able to show more apps than the iphone?

I think when my 8 year old powerbook finally dies, it will be replaced with an iPad not a new laptop.

Your iPad will be able to be synced with any app in your library as long as you have your iTunes account.
