Video of games on the iPad, and what developers plan to do with them

Unfortunately, we weren't able to attend the event in San Francisco yesterday, but our good friends at Joystiq were, and they've brought back this video of Need for Speed: Shift [iTunes link] and a few other games running on the iPad. Not only can you see how the accelerometer works (exactly the same as the iPhone, basically), but you can see how the regular iPhone apps will upscale to full screen (via what looks like a small "button" in the corner) on the iPad. Of course, this video isn't ideal, but it actually looks better than I thought.

Hopefully, of course, developers will actually put in the effort to recreate their apps for the iPad's bigger screen. That's exactly what the makers of Flight Control have said they plan to do; that game will be "re-imagined" to work on the iPad. They talk about not only making use of the bigger screen space, but actually going to the "next generation" of their games. It'll be very interesting to see, as the App Store evolves with the iPad, what kinds of markets emerge. Will we eventually have a set of games that works best on the iPhone, and a set that works better on the "big" screen?

How does The Unofficial APPLE Weblog not go to one of the biggest Apple events, but Joystiq does? I'm always confused as to why you guys never actually cover the events but rely on the less Apple-centric sister blogs for that.

@Mike...because they are owned by AOL and we all know that AOL is hemorrhaging money for years now...

the last thing they can afford is to send our poor guys and gals at TUAW to an APPLE event...lol

sorry guys but poor AO-Hell has been obsolete for years now...lets hope someone with real cash will buy you guys up in the near future so you can actually go to places you should be going

and I say none of this to be negative to TUAW...this is my favorite blog...but you are owned by AOL

I'd like to see the triumphant return of God games. How awesome would a version of Populous be on this thing ? Strategy and RTS's would be kinda cool too.

See, it's comments like that that make all Apple fanboys seem like jerks. Whether the iWhatevers can run Flash or not has got nothing to do with windows.

And I'm not sure how using windows is being lazy. If anything, it's the mac products that are for lazy people; heck the ipad is totally marketed as the ultimate lazy device.

I think it's sort of ironic that using an iPhone on an Apple fanboy page, I can't watch a video talking about cool stuff you can do on an IPad because it's a flash video.

Especially when there are much better alternatives ... using Flash is just lazy. Like using Windows...

While a fan of the iPad in concept, I hope App developers make the application bi-directional. They state that the apps we purchased for the iPhone can be downloaded for free for the iPad.

What about the other way around? What if there are two versions (iPhone/iPad)? Will they be separate apps purchased twice or will the App Store allow you to download two different versions for the same price?

Time will tell

I really hope this game development picks up speed soon. It's looking to be a disappointment. Not to mention the source of infinite ridicule with these sanitary napkin jokes.
