Five things to bring back from the iPad

MobileCrunch has an interesting post up about five things the iPad has and does that Apple would do well to bring back to those of us using the iPhone. I think we'll see more of these as we go along (especially as, you know, some of us actually get to touch and use the device), but this list is a good start.

Bluetooth keyboard support is something that only jailbreakers could do on the iPhone, but it shows up day one on the iPad. The iPad, according to those checking out the SDK code, will also be able to share files with the desktop, and different apps on the iPad will even be able to identify themselves as owners for certain filetypes, which is another cool trick that Apple should teach the old iPhone dog. And of course, that processor -- we can probably expect to see a smaller version of it in a future variation of the iPhone sooner or later, since Apple is always fighting to get battery life and speed to the max.

Of course, the iPad and the iPhone are two different devices, and Apple will want to keep some things separate -- as we've heard already, there are certain interface guidelines for the iPad that the iPhone will never use. But especially if we see the expected update to the iPhone later this year, it's a good guess that we'll also see some of the iPad's more reusable features find their way to the "iPad mini."

I'd be interested in the iPad interface/os on my MacBook as a quick startup way of using it on the run.

With content residing on the iBook store how do publishers submit potential content? In fact what how do large publishers go about getting their epub content in there?

How about the iPad is a bt-keyboard for e.g. Playstation3?
That would be surely cool!

Isn't this pretty much a given?

First the quest for a shared data folder viewable in finder has been on many peoples lists if desired features for a very long time.

Second if there weren't intentions of moving features to the iPhones why call it iPhone OS? There are certainly limitations on what can be done but that isn't a hard cut off. Or stated another way these features may not be supported on all models of iPhone with limitations based on processor and RAM.

Third some features can't be back ported simply because of the small screen. The new SDK does however gave lots of interesting features that may be of limited use on an iPhone. So maybe iPhones don't get 100% of iPhone OS 4.0.

On both devices Apple needs to seriously think about integrating an SD slot and an USB socket. This is hardware but the OS needs to better support the tech. The ultimate hardware hack would be a USB stck camera so that those that really want to supported video can have it. Of course a well supported USB port can be used for lots of otherthings.

The one thing we can be certain with us that Apple will be constantly improving iPhone OS wilth an eye on two different use cases.

I think as time passes they'll even out features in both devices. All that really differentiates an iPod Touch from an iPhone is the camera and phone/3G data ability; I would imagine that the iPhone will pick up some of the iPad's (seriously Apple? That was the best you could do?) software tricks while (hopefully) the iPad will pick up a camera and a USB port.

One thing I hope is one day possible with the iPad via BlueTooth is a Wacom Tablet style mode using a Pogo Stylus. In fact I hope the iPad is interoperable with the desktop. I can see it best acting as an extension and not a replacement.

That'd make a helluva Cintiq-type pad, wouldn't it? iPad docked next to your Mac acting like a second screen, with touch capability? We can hope...

Seeing as you can use the iPhone as a wireless mouse, and get styli for the iPhone, I would imagine a drawing tablet app would be available on launch day, if not soon after.

Here's my take.

First off, I hope that the iPad keyboard dock will work with other iPhone OS devices (namely, iPhone and iPod Touch). Next, I am also hopeful that customizable backgrounds make their way from iPad to iPhone/iPT. I also thought that the accelerometer-aware home screen was quite cool, bring that to the iPhone too.

The keyboard they announced is via dock connector, not bluetooth.
