Apple acknowledges continuing 27" iMac screen issues
Update: MacNN reports that a "reliable source" (read: rumor) has told them that Apple has ceased production of Core i5- and i7-based iMacs until they've fixed this issue for good.At the end of last year, customers who bought 27" iMacs reported screen flickering. Apple acknowledged the problem and released a firmware update intended to fix it back in December. Unfortunately, the problem persists.
According to Ars Technica, Apple's internal support system is aware of the continuing problem and working on a fix. Customers who complain about the issue are to be told that their faulty display can be replaced "...in about three weeks." Note that the units currently for sale have a 3-week shipping time, so you might want to wait a month before making a purchase Ars suggests, and we agree.
The shipping delays began in December when Apple declined to comment on why, but discussion threads pointed to the display. The delay was pushed ahead even further in January, which is how we got to the present 3-week wait.
Here's hoping this gets fixed soon and all you owners can enjoy your 27" iMacs in all their non-flickering glory.

I just decided to check this thread again after a few days and see if you guys had finally gotten flicker-free iMacs? Mine is working great, except curiously I just noticed that the internal microphone isn't working. Looks like a trip to the Apple store is in order. I will wait for that till it's convenient (closest AS right now is a 2-hour drive). But so far no flickering which I LOVE!

February 01 2010 at 6:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAs I mentioned in a previous thread about this, I ordered a 27" i7 in early-mid December. Got it a few days after Christmas and the flickering started a few days later. Apple issued a return with very few questions. My replacement was delayed twice but just happened to ship after the 2nd delay. It arrived today but wasn't due for another 2 weeks! I'm at work so I'm not able to watch it constantly, but so far flicker free! If it does start flickering again, I will report it to Apple but will not send it back until they completely solved the problem. I don't want to do without one as I've done for the past few weeks. Temporary flickering is better than no iMac at all imo. I have Apple care on it so I suppose I've got 3 years to return it for a new one?
February 01 2010 at 4:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBought an 27" i7 on Dec 31. After being delayed for a month, it finally shipped and should arrive tomorrow. No idea yet whether that means the issue is fixed or not, but I sure hope I'm not a guinea pig for it.
February 01 2010 at 4:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's disappointing that the author of this piece failed to include any mention of the "yellow tinge" issue that is also plaguing the 27" iMacs. The fact that this is TUAW should imply complete analysis and coverage of a Mac issue. If the omission is due to a lack of awareness.... thats bad. If its due to a bias in "protecting" the Mac stereotypical quality image, thats even worse!
I have a new i5; it has issues; I comfortable that Apple will make good on it.
Bought my i5 27" iMac at the Apple Store in Zürich, Switzerland, and after a couple of days the flickering problem began (and it's still here...). I've called Apple today and they've logged my case and they've told me that they will call me back as soon as they've solved the problem... hopefully it won't take too long.

February 01 2010 at 2:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust got my i7 27" iMac today after it was delayed by a few days (was supposed to get it Jan 29th). I'm at work so I was only able to plug it in and start it up for a few minutes. I didn't notice anything major wrong, theres was a tiny difference in color or brightness between the top and bottom of the screen, didn't get any flickering.
Ill be taking a closer look at it when I get home, if I find anything wrong Ill just notify Apple and ask if they could email me when they have a 100% fix at which point Ill ask for an exchange or replacement of whatever part is at fault.
