Repair service finds iPad's camera slot
The folks at Mission:Repair have received iPad replacement parts from Apple. While checking them out, they noticed a slot that seems like it could accommodate an iSight. So they pulled an iSight camera from a MacBook pro and guess what happened. It fit perfectly inside the slot in the iPad's frame. In the picture at right, you see the iPad's frame (above and below) and the MacBook Pro's iSight (center). And to add a little more fuel to the fire, some eagle-eyed event watchers claim that the iPad Jobs held on stage at last Wednesday's event actually did have what looks like a camera along the top bezel.
What does this mean? Will future iPads sport an iSight? Probably. But that doesn't explain why the 1st generation's case has the slot. It must have been pulled at the last minute for reasons of cost, function ... who knows.
If you're not going to buy one until it's got a camera, it looks like your prayers will eventually be answered.

February 03 2010 at 7:03 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywould be nice to have a camera. But there is one more possible reason that the ipad might not have a front facing camera. I don't know about other people, but my macbook and my ex-girlfriend's macbook both went nuts with the cooling fans everytime we videochatted. It is a processor intensive activity. And the amount of heat generated might be outside of the ipad's thermal envelope altogether. I can't imagine the ipad having a fan, as I haven't seen any vents on it from the pictures so far...
just my $0.02
I found some great evidence supporting this camera slot. Check it out http://gopost.info/71

Jobs should have gone with his gut instinct that told him there was no place for sudh a tablet. Seriously, what took them so darn long? There is no new technology here, it's an over-priced netbook with a touchscreen. Of course they should have two cameras in it, it should do HD (with output...wireless HD streaming would be nice), it run a real OS that gives you a real file structure available to use, it should support MS Office as a native app, it darn well should multitask, they ought to have incorporated e-ink, it HAD to have a stylus, and it probably should have a separate hardware accelerator for flash. That would have been a compelling product, instead, they've put out the most gimped piece of nonsense they possibly could have. Why couldn't this have come out a year ago (probably even 2 or 3)? And what gets me is that THEY still have people wanting one. This is no iPod, and certainly no iPhone. Heck, my iPhone does more for less...and I don't need a bag to carry it around. This is a joke. Take a look at the MS Courier concept. Tell me Apple couldn't pull that off better. Instead we're left with this blah.

This nonsensical device with no computer functionality for $500 - $800? Really. No thank you. I will continue to hope for a tablet that will allow me to ditch my notebook for short trips.
February 02 2010 at 7:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDream on! There's no way they'd just "ship with a camera" outta the blue.
Apple HAS to hold something in reserve for v 2.0, 3.0, etc. Just like they did with the iPhone (I'm not complaining, I upgraded my iPhone every year so far and will probably do so again this year...)
Camera, Multi-tasking (if really needed), etc. will all eventually come. As will an HD version with widescreen and higher resolution. Patience... and keep thanking those early adopters for their $$$$ contributions to Apple! :)
Given the inability of the average joe to hold a regular camera steady (see: Youtube), what makes you think people will be able to hold their iPads steady enough to have a prolonged video chat?
Try holding a 1.5 lb book out in front of your face for about 10 minutes. See how much it wobbles?
Or perhaps a nice little surprise announcement that the shipping version of the iPad would also include the camera.
Very possible.
So the more important question is does the board have a plug for the camera, and does that mean I can toss one in when I get my iPad?
