Rumor: Apple developing second tablet device, made from unicorn tears

Just when you thought Apple tablet rumors were dead -- because, you know, they kind of announced one already -- another has emerged like a zombie rising from its grave to feast upon the brains of gullible fanboys. You may want to grab your salt shakers and wash its grains down with a stiff shot of whiskey for this one though. TechCrunch (a company familiar with tablet devices *wink*) is reporting that Apple may be hard at work developing a second tablet device - this one more computer than consumer device, said to be bigger and badder than its recently announced sibling. TC's MG Seigler claims to have "heard" from second-hand sources (I didn't realize Goodwill sold rumors) that iPad Maxi will feature a more robust software stack with more in common to the desktop flavor of OSX rather than iPhone OS, and powered by Intel's Atom processor.
Before the iPad was revealed last week, rumors circulated for a long time that Apple might be working on two different sizes for the screen of the device. Some had the device as small as 7″, others were saying it would go up to 10.6″. (The actual size of the iPad is 9.7″.) But the information we're hearing is that Apple is thinking much larger for another version of the product, maybe all the way up to the 15.4″ size that it currently uses for one version of the MacBook Pro.
Aside from the fact that Apple is now rolling its own chips, and hence no longer requires Intel's power-sipping Atom processor, why on earth fragment and possibly cannibalize your product line with TWO competing products that essentially attack the same markets from two different points? It isn't in Apple's nature to throw pasta at walls in hopes something adheres. Did we learn nothing from Steve's mobile device chart last week? He clearly outlined where the company has positioned iPad: as a tweener, straddling the iPod and Mac segments -- serving a role that Netbooks have failed to fill. So where does this fella fit in? And pray tell, how would strapping OSX to Netbook hardware (ala Atom) make it comparable in terms of features and performance to a MacBook? This rumor does not compute.

Believe it? Neither do I. I call shenanigans.

It's probably true, if for no other reasons than a) big tech companies like Apple are always working on concept devices (many of which never make it to market, and b) if the iPad is a runaway hit, Apple will probably want to have other tablet devices in the pipeline, and an iPad Pro would fit the bill nicely. Just imagine if they put the full OS X on it, giving you access to all Mac software as well as multitasking.

You know what would be incredible?

An 15.4" iMac (just hear me out )

with the aluminum stand housing a power adapter already with a hookup (30 pin perhaps?) to connect / power the display ...

So when you want an iMac , it's an iMac, albeit a small one. But when you remove the screen from the stand it becomes your 15.4" tablet.

That's my dream. Full osx when you need it,
iPhone/ipad funconality otherwise

I'll tell you what if its a ten inch tablet i will not be purchasing an iPad anymore but if its a fifteen inch that the rumors continue to circle its a new iMac. Either way both make sense right now iMac usually gets an update before christmas and with everything heading to touch screen a touch iMac or notebook would be the next thing to come especially since there is talks of a new macbook pro and the new tablet size rumored is about a high end macbook pro size. The idea that Apple has reserved both the name iPad and iSlate makes me also thing that it will be another tablet with OS X. It would also make since that if there is a new tablet on its way that they would still put it out after the iPad Apple has there different versions of iMac, Macbooks, and iPods/iPhone. Why wouldn't they make several versions of the tablet. A low end and a high end. Another thing that is rumored is that Apple is still in talks about a deal with Verizon. This is either for a new iPhone (maybe the one pictured on engadget) or a new tablet either way they would have to develop a second tablet if it were to go to Verizon because it would have to run on a different network right? I would say if we see a OS X iSlate it will be mid this year, because much like Apple did with the iPhone and the iPod Touch first came the iPhone and a bit later came the iPod Touch. However it could also not be until next January. Having the iPhone G4 come out in the Summer.

"Aside from the fact that Apple is now rolling its own chips, and hence no longer requires Intel's power-sipping Atom processor."

Uh no. The A4 is essentially an Apple designed Arm processor chip which is why it runs the iPhone OS and all of the iPhone apps right out of the box. The key word is designed since they do not manufacture the chip but have it made for them, probably from Samsung.

To run a more traditional flavor of OS X like Snow Leopard would require the use of a late model Intel x64_86 compatible chip. It is highly unlikely that Apple will try and create the equivalent of another AMD in-house to compete with Intel on speed or price. Much more likely is for them to just order customized parts from Intel that better fit their product strategy just as they did with MacBook Air.

Unless you think they are going to move OS X proper to Arm (a lower power but also lower-powered architecture) after they've just managed to leave the legacy of PowerPC behind in which case you're just nuts.

I think an "iPad Pro" is a very likely thing. It's the smart thing for apple to do. They'll release the regular iPad first, and then when all the hype settles down, they'll announce the iPad Pro, and they'll sell even more of those cause it'll actually have features that are practical.

I would like to see an Apple tablet in the same style as most, if not all, PC tablets. The iPad "tablet" is only half of a typical PC tablet. PC tablets are basically notebook computers, except the screen can be flipped around to face the other way, so that when you close it, the screen is facing out. This configuration is what Apple is emulating with the iPad, but they have totally ignored that a tablet should be a full notebook computer, with a desktop OS and the ability to run all desktop programs, and having a full [notebook-]sized keyboard. Well, that is what I think a tablet should be, anyway. A tablet like this could do everything the iPad could do, and everything a MacBook could do.

Of course they are. Since the iPad will slaughter Macbook Air sales at the least.

I'd love a hybrid iPad/iBook with iPad features and the ability to run full software and have a keyboard.
