Tricking your iPhone to play TV shows and movies in portrait view

By default, movies and TV shows in the iPod portion of the iPhone and iPod touch play in landscape view. The biggest change with respect to video orientation came about with iPhone OS 2.0, which provided the option for landscape-right viewing (that is, with the volume and silent/vibrate buttons facing up). While most videos could, and should, be viewed in landscape, there are times that call for a portrait perspective -- for example, when placing your iPhone into a dock, which is what I do when working out.

Getting your iPhone to play a movie or TV show in portrait mode requires a simple change in the video's tag, from TV Show or Movie to Podcast. Simply right-click on the file and select "get info "(or you could use the Command-I shortcut). Then, in the "Media Kind" section within the "Options" tab of the video, select Podcast. Now, the videos will show up in both the Podcasts and Videos section of the iPod portion on your iPhone.

Obviously, this isn't something you'd want to do with every movie or TV show in your library. So, to revert the file back to its old self, you'd want to follow the same process and change the video back to a TV show or movie.

hah I thought I was the only person who knew the on-the-go-playlist-with-one-audio trick to get videos to play in portrait - it's ALSO useful for when you want to be able to *listen* to a video/ music video while using another app - just add one music track, play it, quit iPod and then use the music control (I've enabled double-tap home screen) and you're then listening to the video and can do something else with your eyes.

So, there are people that actually want to make the videos on the relatively small iPhone display even smaller? May I suggest a iPod nano for a even tinier viewing experience?

@J Dogg.

Hold the phone so it goes into landscape mode and then when lying on ur side in bed, ensure that the dock side of the phone is facing upwards. The screen wont change to portrait mode that way.

Here's what I'd like to figure out. I make commercials, and occasionally my clients are out of the office and want to review a spot for air on their iphones. Quicktime 7 allows me to export video for iphone that I drag into an email and send to my client. It works GREAT - except that the movies will ONLY play in portrait mode and never landscape.

Quicktime X removed this export functionality and only allows mobileme, youtube uploading, which isn't a good idea when you're dealing with national commercials.

Any ideas how I can get the iphone friendly quicktimes to play in landscape when emailed?

I found out that if you just put the video into a playlist with at least 1 song, you can go through the playlist and then watch in portrait or landscape, whichever strikes your fancy

I second jj.wendt. You don't need to put an audio track in the playlist, and you can even play video in the background while you use other apps this way (play, press home button, press sleep button, double click home button to bring up iPod interface on the lock screen, press play again, then you're free to unlock and so-called "multitask").

None of the above suggestions work for me. Creating a playlist with just movies in it won't sync, adding a single audio track to the playlist makes it sync but then only shows the one music track and none of the videos. Latest version of iTunes and latest iPhone software.

If you put video in an "On the Go" playlist you can do the same without ever having to change type or sync with iTunes.
