Could iPad prices drop the way the iPhone did after launch?
Looks like they might. That's the opinion of a note out last night from Credit Suisse quoting meetings with Apple executives. The Wall Street Journal this morning quotes Senior Analyst Bill Shope as saying "While it remains to be seen how much traction the iPad gets initially, management noted that it will remain nimble (pricing could change if the company is not attracting as many customers as anticipated)."This is a similar situation to the original iPhone launch in 2007, where the original price quickly dropped US $200 from the original $599 retail. Agitated early adopters got a $100 Apple store credit from Apple.
Apple will be watching sales of the device carefully in the early days, and the company appears to have enough margin built into the iPad to take some hits if it is slow moving.
On the other hand, if the iPad blows the doors off Apple stores in sales, don't expect any discounts soon.

And frequent trips to the computer for re-syncing on the 16gig model??? I have a 32gig iPhone. 4 movies, loads of photos, tons of songs, 22 gigs left. And what about that N support??? Can you say wireless sync? No plugs?

I think that in the next few weeks they will start a pre-order system so they can gauge how many units to send to each store. and from that they could see how hot the ipad will be and any price drop will happen from that info before the launch rather than pull another iphone 1.0 game and piss off folks.
I decided to skip the iPad and hackintoshed a tablet pc. It turns out you can do some pretty interesting things in Mac OS X with notebooks that have serial wacom digitizers installed on them...

You mean Apple might apply standard corporate strategy to the pricing of a product?
WOW!
Not.
Keep the prices and stick that camera in there!
February 08 2010 at 5:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would consider an Ipad for my house if it was a few hundred dollars cheaper for the high-end. Right now, by the time you get all the accessories you need, the package is right around $1000.
I am not fooled by the lower memory one. Everyone is going to be a bit dissapointed about the small memory if they start loading up video on it. Really, any large amount of media is going to require frequent trips to a main computer to re-sync new content.
And with the lack of Flash and the fact that HTML5 content is years away from becoming mainstream, streaming video isn't going to really happen. At least not premium content. But isn't that what Apple wants? You to buy your shows from iTunes?
@Brian! My idea exactly. I have an iPod Touch 1st Gen 16GB and there is no spare room left. So the 16GB model will be a step back instead of a step forward.
I wonder if it will be jailbreaked too ;)
Right now, by the time you get all the accessories you need, the package is right around $1000.
That's subjective - you mean all the accessories YOU need. I personally wouldn't have a need to buy any other accessories for it and I'm sure a lot of the people who are seriously considering one feel the same.
If you really need all these extra accessories to do what you need to do then you'd be better off buying a MacBook instead.
Sought after gadgets in limited supply already have a secondary market at drastically higher prices (like the Wii console at launch). Why shouldn't tech companies earn the profit normally made by e-bay sellers. Maybe too high a price will kill interest in the product (like say, the original PS3), but Apple's core customers are not as price sensitive as the average consumer. Besides, if the iPad provides an immediate benefit, it is worth a price premium to have it immediately.
