Dev team releases PwnageTool 3.1.5 to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 firmware

Jailbreakers ahoy! Yesterday brought the release of the Dev Team's pwnage tool for jailbreaking and unlocking iPhones equipped with the new 3.1.3 firmware. As usual, though, there are a few catches: first, if you don't need to update to 3.1.3, the dev team says you shouldn't bother anyway -- it doesn't do much that the old versions of the firmware doesn't, so if you don't need to upgrade, just leave your jailbreak as is.

3G and 3GS users especially should be leery of this one, since if a mistake is made, there's a chance you could upgrade your firmware and then not be able to unlock it again. They also have all sorts of other warnings and exceptions on their blog post. As they say, don't download and run those files without seriously thinking about what you're doing with your iPhone.

If, after all of that thinking, you decide it is time to crack open your iPhone with the 3.1.3 firmware, the jailbreak will put together a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore back on to your iPhone -- here's a quick how-to to start with. Good luck, and be careful out there!

I have the usual tutorials for jailbreaking 3.1.3 Right now the 2G and 3G guides are up and I will do something special with the 3G S guide. I'll show you how to not only restore to 3.1.2 (if you have your ECID SHSH on file), but I'll then make a guide for getting to 3.1.3 and remaining locked.

Where can I see your tutorials? Any goodness for us poor saps stuck with a new 3GS with Modem Firmware 05.11.07? I haven't been able to get PwnageTool to work for me.

I'm desperate.

Like many of the commenters I saw on the Engadget post, I think I'll be waiting for 4.0 to be jailbroken before I do any upgrading. It just doesn't seem to be worth the effort for this particular update.

Does this fix the smartlist bug in Apple's 3.1.3 firmware update? If so, I'll jailbreak for the first time since the 2G iPhone.

Pwnage Tool rarely, if ever, fixes any bugs within Apple's firmware. They merely allow you create custom firmware that you can install on your phone. Its possible that someone could code and release a fix on Cydia or something, but generally speaking, if its a bug from Apple, then Apple is the one who has to fix it.

What is this smart playlist bug that everyone is talking about, by the way? It sounds like an iTunes issue, not specific to the iPhone.

Or... we wait for GeoHot's next version. Blackrain was so easy and foolproof, the "iPhone Dev Team" should be ashamed.

Blackra1n has a lot of issues for unlockers and jailbreakers after its initial run. Several parts of the file system weren't either released, or certain services weren't installed during the jailbreak process. As a result, its not as "clean" as doing a full restore with custom firmware, which is what the iPhone Dev Team offers through pwnage tool.

That said, Blackra1n isn't bad, and for users with 3.1.2 out of the box, it was your only option until Redsn0w was released. I think its just silly to be taking sides in the "iPhone hacking wars."
