Found Footage: Charlie Rose hosts iPad chat club
In case you missed it last week, PBS top gab guy Charlie Rose (no relation) hosted a roundtable discussion about the latest product from Steve & co. on his show, featuring the NYT's David Carr, 'Uncle' Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, and TechCrunch founder/would-be tablet impresario Michael Arrington. The segment is about 23 minutes long, but it's a good conversation.
Mossberg described the iPad as "wicked fast" and praised the software's grace notes and sophistication, while noting that nobody has really succeeded at making a tablet that the market embraced wholeheartedly. Arrington said "Personally, I think people are going to love this." David Carr (who strongly evokes the actor Austin Pendleton for some reason) also compared the Apple tablet to the Kindle, with the Amazon device coming out unfavorably: "Mr. Jobs did say we stand on the shoulders of Amazon, and he was very professional and gracious about that, but he left that picture of the Kindle up there for two minutes... it looked like something Mennonites made 150 years ago." Ow.

As someone who has worked with Austin Pendleton before...he's not actually much like Carr. There is a physical resemblance but Austin seems a lot less...slippery. Or something. And Austin has a pronounced speech impediment while Carr has a slight lisp. It's quite strange.
My two cents on the iPad:
As far as this video, I actually kind of love the debate. I work in Apple retail (fifth ave) and I have to say, I wasn't down for the device at first but after talking to many "tweener" customers (those who are not 100% Mac devotees but are drawn to the tech like a moth to flame and are unhappy with their PC experience), there a lot of less tech-savvy people out there that are excited at the prospect of it and for whom the device was specifically created. Mark my words, these people will buy it and it will be an even more powerful halo for mac products than were the iPod and iPhone, because the beauty of the software and it's ease of use are so obvious in a device with this screen size. And I think what will really kick it over the edge for most on-the-fence buyers will be third-party apps. All you need to find is one iPad-specific killer app for your particular niche (graphic design, comic book reader, your favorite magazine distribution, iBooks, textbook apps with lower book prices with multimedia in the textbook, etc etc etc) for the device to be worth the entry price. I think Apple's gonna do very well on iPad, and this is coming from me, an Apple employee who won't be buying the device in the first generation because there are already too many solutions for my needs on my MBP, iMac, and Kindle!
What does Carr say at 22:05 when he talks over Arrington about a camera by xmas. Can't make it out.

The battery life thing is interesting, though. Longer battery life is great, but getting out of the habit of regularly charging means I get stuck with a dead Kindle far more often than a dead iPhone.
But, it sure is nice to let it sit in a bag for a couple weeks and still have it work.
Carrying an iPad means I can still easily carry my Kindle. For me, iPad isn't a Kindle killer, the two devices will live in harmony in my bag.
I would have invited Engadget's Josh Topolsky instead of Arrington, otherwise it was a very interesting discussion. Waltberg was especially interesting, as usual.
It slightly reminded me of a secret meeting between mafia bosses, though. The dark backgrounds, the firm poses, Rose's face and Carr's voice ... kinda scary altogether. Luckily world domination wasn't part of the agenda.
I can't understand Rose's fascination with Mike Arrington.

This also helps to understand his twisted comments. On one hand he believes "his product" is the superior one. On the other hand since it isn't "his product" anymore he wants Apple to crush it.
February 09 2010 at 10:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGiven that he's in litigation over the Crunchpad, I can see why he would have asked that they not talk about it. To not mention it at all does seem a little evasive.
February 09 2010 at 10:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyArrington in the video talks about Apple going with AT&T. Did everyone forget that Jobs said iPad works with almost any micro-SIM? It's an unlocked device.
February 09 2010 at 8:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMike lives on link and comment bait, and has for so long that he can't process the world in anything except terms that are likely to generate ad churn. He heard the same info we did, that the ipad is unlocked, but has to modify the information so it becomes good link and comment bait. It's kinda sad.
