Riven coming to iPhone

Here's great news for Myst fans with iPhones -- a port of Riven will be available this year.

According to a post on the Myst Online Forums, the game is in development and will be released "...by early summer at the latest." Just in time for gaming at the beach!

Riven is the sequel to Myst, the adventure game that revolutionized the industry when it was first released for the Mac in 1993. The goal of Myst is to solve a series of complicated puzzles and ultimately answer the question, "What's going on here?" Riven is the sequel to Myst and describing its plot would reveal spoilers for both, so we'll let you play it for yourself.

Myst for iPhone was released last July to the praise of the game's dedicated fans. I've played both the Mac and iPhone versions, and am happy to say that the iPhone port is faithful to the original while the touch interface adds a whole new level of fun (don't click on that lever, go ahead and touch it!). With that in mind, I expect an equally pleasant experience with Riven for iPhone.

Of course, they'd both be gorgeous on the iPad (and huge -- the iPhone build of Myst is 533MB!), but we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Dudes, just the thought of Riven on iPhone gives me chills.......if they put a hi-res version on the iPad, I think I might have to go change my pants.

Brian Reading isn't making much sense, though. Developers releasing new versions of old games isn't "clogging up" the App Store, as if it has some sort of limited amount of space. I would have never played Myst again since the 90's if they hadn't ported it to iPhone, and it has been my favorite game by far, and I would have paid twice as much for as they asked. It's just a great experience for people that really enjoyed and loved these games. Don't be lame about it. If you don't like it...go play "great" new games like Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3.

I'll buy it, play for a few minutes then forget about it - and it will be worth the entire purchase price just for that if they get the tram ride at the beginning right. That part of the game still sticks with me, ten-ish years later...

It struck me after the iPad announcement that the whole MYST series would work well there. The iPhone is just too small, I think. I've still got MYST IV and V on the shelf -- time to replay them.

Riven on the iPad = killer app. Been wanting to play Riven again for a while now but there is no native OS X version (wait maybe there is) and it caused classic to crash every few minutes back when that was still an option so being able to play it on an iPad would be great.

@ Bryan: To run Myst on OS X get realMyst.

*yawn*

Can we please have less recycled crap from the early 90's on the App Store? It's like people getting worked up over Final Fantasy I and II on the iPhone versus the new original RPG Square Enix is working on for the platform.

It's not like there's limited room in the App Store, dude. (Or limited "interest" people can have in games ... who's to say people aren't excited about old AND new Square Enix games?)

The App Store isn't limited, but developers are. The more often people show them that they can put trash or recycled stuff in the store, and make a quick buck, the more often they'll do it.

Also, get them doing this enough, and they won't have the resources to even be putting out the good stuff.

I loved Myst and I loved Riven even more. My only gripe with Myst was I never knew how close I was to the end. Then it just ended.

Anyway, can anyone tell me if there's a way to run Myst on an MacOSX system on an Intel processor. I'd love to play it again on my large screen TV.

One last comment...

To me, one of the best parts of Myst/Riven was the immersive experience. The audio and music is a HUGE part of this experience. Playing it on a small screen without the benefit of immersive stereo sound is not the way this game should be played IMO.

YES! I've been waiting for this!! Myst was fantastic, but there is simply no better game than Riven.

What will be REALLY great is if they port it to the iPad at its full resolution - if they did that, then it would be even higher quality than the original computer game itself (which I guess will make it unlikely that they do so).

Oh boy I can't wait! Riven is one of the best pc games of all time, even though it's extremely difficult.

One of the greatest puzzle/adventure games of all time, if not one of the greatest PC games of all time. I actually rediscovered Riven recently using Riven X (I own the original 5-disc game from back in the day) and have been playing through it again. The level of immersion and the quality of the art is simply astounding. I'm not sure how it'll fare on the small screen, but nonetheless I'm happy to see this being presented to a new generation.
