First look at Final Fantasy on the iPhone

Now that Plants vs. Zombies is out on the App Store, the new hotness to wait for is going to be Square's Final Fantasy. Courtesy of the guys over at Touch Arcade (who I'm disappointed I didn't get to meet at Macworld), here's the first trailer and screenshots of the retro RPG running on the iPhone. The games are definitely updated (the original game ran on the NES, and clearly the graphics above look better than that), but as for exactly what the differences are, or how they'll be released (will we get both in the same purchase?), we'll have to wait and see.

No date yet either -- all Square-Enix says right now is "soon." Still, if you're a Final Fantasy fan and the video above doesn't get your blood pumping, time to check your pulse. Can't wait to replay these old favorites on Apple's much newer handheld devices.

I can't wait to sit through lengthy dialogue and cutscenes on my train to work.

Looks like the ever-continuing port/remake of the Wonderswan Color version that has manifested itself on the Playstation, Gameboy Advance and Playstation Portable.

Fun game but 2 is easily the hardest Final Fantasy (and the one I cannot bring myself to level up enough to beat).

Does anyone know if this is the Final Fantasy 2 that the US market called Final Fantasy 2?

This is the Japanese Final Fantasy II which was not released in the US, except for the FFI&II combo cart for the Gameboy Advance.

The US "Final Fantasy II" for the SNES was a originally released in Japan as "Final Fantasy IV EasyType" (yes, they had an "EasyType" and a "HardType" for that game.)

No. This is not the FF2 that was released for the SNES. That game is now referred to by it's Japanse Number: FF4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_fantasy_4). The game they are releasing for the iPhone is this game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_2.
