Rumor: AT&T will carry 3G iPad in stores

Here's an interesting rumor I hadn't considered yet: sources inside AT&T are telling Boy Genius Report that AT&T's retail stores are planning to carry the 3G versions of the iPad. It's not unexplainable, given that AT&T is the partner for the 3G service, and so I guess they have a vested interest in selling the devices. Still, when you think of "tablet computer designed for consumption of media and minor household tasks," you don't really think of AT&T. In fact, without a phone on it at all, it's just strange to think that the iPad would have a place in AT&T stores anywhere.

But if the 3G versions will make money for the phone company (and we'll bet they will), they might as well sell them. If the rumor is true, and the AT&T store is closer to you than the Apple store, you might as well check there on release day (remembering that 3G iPads will be released after their WiFi-only cousins). In the meantime, let's all hope their 3G network holds up under the increased strain.

Has't been announced, and since it would cut into the mobile carrier's RPU, I doubt it will be.

That being said, I would be very surprised if the JB community passed up this opportunity.

That would be my preferred option.

What's really interesting here is how AT&T is positioned to become the next provider of "anywhere, anytime" internet service and take away some business from cable companies (like Comcast... er xFinity?) providing internet to your home.

I'm sure Apple will keep a significant part of the first few weeks of iPad to the Applestores but after that there is really no reason why popular models of the iPad could not be available through the exact same distribution channel as any iPod touch. Activation of the data plan is done on the device, so really in terms of contract it is no different than any Mac or other Apple device. So hopefully BestBuy but also in time Target, Walmart, Costco, anyone who sells a Touch.

At least if they did this it would be awesome....

I've been debating on 3g or no 3g... I'm thinking that as long as ATT offers the whole '1-day' pass thing the 3g might be useful in a pinch, and just keep it disabled the rest of the time.

I've got a Verizon card for my MBP that I use a couple times a year (1 day pass) on road trips and it has been a life saver.

I think they are just doing month duration plans (15$ for 250MB, 30$ for 'unlimited'), but since it's unlocked, if T-Mo has a day-pass, then you should be able to use that, AFAIU

Considering the fact that the iPad has Bluetooth, there is no reason a person couldn't use a Bluetooth headset and microphone with Skype to make phone calls.

This way, you don't have to hold your iPad to your head when you make a call! lol

Receiving calls is another story, I guess, if the app's not running.

Why is it strange to think that AT&T would have these devices in stores? It sounds like you haven't been in an AT&T store recently Mike...

As the first commenter pointed out, AT&T carries both data cards and netbooks - in their stores. I think the iPad would fit perfectly, probably right next to the iPhones or with the data cards/netbooks.

Yeah, finding a good salesperson to go back to is a huge plus. A store full of idiots is never fun, no matter the company.

Why didn't you just buy one the next week when they were in stock and cancel your order?

Just remember, as with the iPhone, any devices purchased from AT&T are only replaced via service parts at Apple under warranty. If you purchased directly from Apple, and your device has issues within the first 14 days, they can give you a brand new retail device as a swap. Not so with anything purchased from AT&T or anywhere else. AT&T generally does not replace new units with new units; they send you to Apple for warranty service.

I bought an iPhone from an AT&T store and had an issue with the headset jack. I brought it to the apple store and they immediatly swapped it out for a new one, I made sure it was unopened new. The nice thing about getting the equipment at AT&T is they are a lot better at knowing rate plans and promotional features, which is nice. Then, if there is ever hardware issues, you have the Apple store to go to. I guess it would depend on which location is closer to you though, to be more convinent to you.

Fair enough, the product quality is reliable. In my case I have an Apple store 35 miles away, ATT store is 2 miles. Will buy at ATT and keep my fingers crossed?.

Next big news will be when will the 3G iPad go on sale.
