Hints of video chat for iPhones and iPads

UPDATE: Engadget confirms video support, file downloads and local storage, plus more text tools (user entries in Dictionary, for example), location-aware ads in Maps, the ability to draw to external displays and prototype support for a "handwriting keyboard." Neat!

9to5Mac reports that it has found both icons and code in the iPhone 3.2 SDK that could be indicative of video chat functionality coming to future iPads and/or iPhones. Specifically, there are icons labelled "AcceptVideo" and "DeclineOrEndVideo" complete with camera icons reminiscent of those already used by iChat, as well as a text string in the TelephonyUI which reads: "setButton2:_updateButtonSettings:_buttonWidthinitForVideoChatWithFrame"
-- both of which are indicative of at least the embryonic beginnings of coding for video chat.

This isn't the first hint we've heard of video conferencing coming to some future iDevice. Apple-issued replacement parts for the iPad's frame contain a slot identical to the one used for iSight cameras on the MacBook, and another repair company has recently issued pics of what it claims is the next-gen iPhone's front face, complete with a mysterious hole that could be used for a front-facing camera. Many have cited the lack of any kind of camera and therefore the impossibility of video conferencing as one of their biggest disappointments concerning the iPad. General consensus among analysts is that even if Apple doesn't include a camera in the first-gen iPad, it almost certainly will next year; 9to5Mac's unearthing of video chat code in the iPhone 3.2 SDK is only the latest bit of evidence in support of that theory.

The next generation Iphone will be much more like the 2g model, which in my opinion was almost indestructable. Why oh why did they make screen replacement $100 dollars on those, I will never know. I think what apple is trying to do with the firmware updates is get everyone over to att or Fido. They are locking up the patches one by one and holding up the contract to ATT and so on. This next Iphone will be amazingly better...lets all hope.

So we see the camera button there, we see the camera code in the SDK and people are STILL thinking the camera is going to be in gen2? Isn't it possible that it will ship with a camera and just not announced at the event? Matter of fact isn't the fact that Apple is recently trying to hide all of their shipment details mean they have more to hide in terms of what parts they are shipping? They are possibly shipping millions of more cameras but trying to hide it so they can surprise with a camera on the iPad at launch... just saying it's possible...

I definitely don't think that location-aware ads in Maps is neat at all.

I dunno. Of all the kind of ads I can be subjected to, location and context aware ads are likly to be the least intrusive and maybe even helpful. It all depends on implementation. But say I am at home, and I want to call Pizza Hut. I don't have the number handy, so I open maps and type in pizza. it shows the piza hut, plus an ad for Double Save's pizza. That to me would be kinda cool.

@DJFriar: If it was location AND context aware, then yes, possibly useful. However, the article only said location aware. Which means if you're searching for pizza, you might get ads for a cheap electronics store nearby and maybe a jewelry outlet, etc...

Not to mention, if I'm paying somewhere between $200-800+ for a device, I don't want to be seeing ads on the built-in applications. At least not without me explicitly giving permission to datamine my geolocation info.

I am betting Apple has already developed a camera for the ipad and ipod touch similar to clip on webcams for older laptops. Reasons for this are:
Cost, this allow Apple to break the $500.00 price point.
Solves having two cameras forward and rear facing.
Camera will work with both ipad and ipod touch (maybe that is why the last generation of touch didn't get a cam like everyone was thinking)
and lastly; because I saw it on Apple's own ipad web site the morning after the big release (Oh GOD, how I wished I had done a screen save of that page now, but I didn't)

I may be crazy but...

Would it be THAT hard for a 3rd party to bring to market a camera, front and rear facing, for the iPad? Now that the developers can use the dock connector would this be too much to ask for? A small barrel shaped camera that would turn to face front or back would be great!

Sure, this is something that may be added in future iPad models but if the projected sales are even close to what actual sales are this would be a great accessory.

Agreed. There's plenty of room for third-party manufacturers to fill this need, either with dock-connector cameras or with wireless WiFi or Bluetooth cams. (Incidentally, that's another good reason for a bezel - it gives you a space to clamp a camera to the device!) My personal feeling is that Apple perceived the video-chat user group to be too small to merit the cost of engineering a camera into the first-gen iPad; if this turns out to be a popular third-party-supported application, I'm sure that future versions will include one.

I don't think we'll see 3rd party cameras for the iPad. I doubt any manufacturer is going to take the chance on coming out with a camera if Apple is going to have their own built-in within the year.

Great so now we will have 2 crappy cameras in the iPhone. I say screw the ichat front facing camera stuff and just put one nice quality camera in the freakin' phone.

Anyway Does the iPad even have a camera?

No, but the suggestion from the article is that it will some day (perhaps next gen).

I'd personally rather have one decent camera in the iPhone to be honest though.

Buy a Nikon. I don't get the fascination with wanting high quality cameras in a phone.

Is the front-facing camera really such a big deal for people? I've never managed to use any of mine for anything other than scanning books for Delicious Library, which I guess would be nice for an iPad, but hardly the killer app.

Videoconferencing would require the use of a dock, or at least propping up the thing so the camera wasn't giving a good view up your nostrils and the screen is too small, surely? I get the impression from people that use it professionally that you really need a full-size picture before it becomes comfortable.

Yes. It is the only feature that I could use to justify purchasing an iPad. I travel 4 days a week for work and use Skype to video chat with my wife and daughter. I would happily use an iPad to avoid having to turn on my laptop. All the other features would be nice, and I'd use them, but not enough to spend that much money.
