Best Buy to sell iPads

Last Tuesday, Apple's COO Tim Cook announced that consumers will be able to buy the iPad at Best Buy locations in the US.

While speaking at the Goldman Sachs annual tech conference in San Francisco, Mr. Cook told the crowd that the iPad will be sold at "... places with really great assisted sales," like Best Buy. There's no word on iPads appearing at other 3rd party retailers, domestically or overseas, but Mr. Cook says that we can expect sales partners to expand over time.

Apple began selling Macs at Best Buy, a big box store in the US, in 2006. A year later that program expanded into the small, store-within-a-store boutiques that many locations feature today. Macs, accessories and soon, iPads, can all be had at Best Buy.

As for the propaganda, Tim laid it on thick. "The experience is just absolutely incredible," he said. "And so we're obviously very excited about this thing and can't wait to start shipping it."

Hey guys

I'm working for this new startup company in Palo Alto that was started by people who were sick and tired of the way eBay is treating the people who make their website successful.

This company, "yardsellr" is based off the idea that people are, by nature, buyers and sellers and we want to make those processes as happy as they possibly can be. That's why we are trying to make the experience as easy, quick and efficient as possible.

Whenever something is posted, the item is marketed on your twitter and facebook so that all your friends can see the product and maybe buy it. It is also marketed on our twitter and all over the web (by our fabulous marketing team!)

Check it out here: http://yardsellr.com/C2g

And please feel free to hit me up with any comments, questions or feedback that you might have - maryminno@yahoo.com

I hope you love the website as much as we do :)

I've been told by a member of staff there that Currys in the UK expects to sell the iPad too.

as the Apple Expert at my Best Buy...I take great offense to some of these comments...

First of all...Apple Products that we sell are the same price as the Apple Store...and the occasional thing that is priced over Apple prices...all you have to do is ask for a price match...

and as far as things being over priced...you have no idea what a business model is...and what it is about...if you don't want to buy the items from us don't buy them...but we offer connivence and mostly knowledgeable staff about what you need for your life...

I work my ass off to take care of my customers so much more that I have ever received from an Apple Store...being the Fanboy that I am...I DETEST going to the Apple Store...because it is a nightmare...kids everywhere...have to make an appt that it takes at least 3-4 days to get an appt...then you have to wait when you get there...because they never have enough Genius bar workers...and they then take out their magic lights to check for water damage etc...

with Best Buy...when you get a Black Tie Protection Plan with Accidental...means you don't have to worry about what happens to your product...because life happens...and you can get it fixed or replaced with no drama...love that...and no waiting for an appt...no dealing with them trying to find something you may have done wrong to your Apple product...no getting tackled by the numerous kids that run rampant thru the Apple store...so I love the Best Buy experience...

my 2 cents

Which Best Buy do you work at? The last time I had an experience in a Best Buy that could be described as convenient, with any member of the staff that could be described as knowledgable, was about 6 years ago. Since then, I've seen a steady decline in the level of service at all of my nearby BB locations. The demos are often completely smashed or non-functional, and this goes for everything from cellphones to netbooks to video games, and yes, even the Apple boutique area. The staff is apathetic at best, though more often arrogant and rude.

In comparison, the Apple stores near me, even one in the very same mall as my most local BB, are clean, organized, staffed by friendly staff who will jump through hoops to help you, and though I've occasionally had to wait a day or two on a repair, it's nothing compared to the horror of BB tech support that I had the misfortune of experiencing multiple times (my pre-Apple days).

Now of course this is anecdotal evidence at best, and everyone's experiences may vary. Obviously you say your BB is better and your local Apple stores are a frustrating experience. However, that's just the point I'm making. You don't need to get defensive of BB as a company just because you work for them and happen to be proud of the effort you make there. I applaud you for that, and wish there were more people like you working in my local BB, but the fact of the matter is, BB isn't perfect. Neither is Apple.

@Joe...thank you for not attacking me personally for my comments...

yes I am in South Beach Miami Beach, Florida and we have an amazing team in our store...but yes there are many display models that are not working all of the time...and that isn't our fault...when you are a big box store like us...you have hundreds if not thousands of people putting their hands on the products

we are relatively new...opened last August and have done gangbuster business since opening...and continue to blow away other stores that are twice and 3 times our size...we are small because we are in a Parking Garage/mini Mall...but we pack a punch...our team loves making our customers happy...but there are many times nothing we do will make someone happy...and we have to stand by our rules...fact is no one is perfect...but my experience is that...every Apple Store I have ever been in...has been packed and chaotic at the very least...that is my point...I have never been able to get an appt the day I wanted one ever...maybe your neck of the woods isn't as APPLE CRAZY as they are in South Florida but I'm sure you know exactly what I am talking about when I say chaotic...

there is a screwed up feeling at a lot of Best Buy locations from what I hear and that is something our Management and Team members don't want to have happen to us...we have fun at work and we know our stuff...and if we don't know...we know who to find to get the answers...

I also have a negative aspect to my performance in that I don't speak Spanish...and Miami is Latin Heaven...so I find it difficult to help everyone every time...but I have a support system to help me when that is the case

and you are right...no one is perfect...but I think we give the best experience possible for our guests and will continue to do so for a long time to come...and it's really hard for us because we are busy from open to close EVERY SINGLE DAY...except Superbowl weekend where it was dead...but the superbowl was in our area...so that was to be expected

just remember that when you are dealing with people they want to be treated as you want to be treated...so if you come in with a negative attitude concerning the place they call home (work) then they are going to be defensive towards you back...that’s what I find to be the case where ever you go...thanks again

The BB by me is one of the few in the area that doesn't have the Mac store section (they have the Magnolia higher-end home theater stuff instead). They still have the iPod and iPhone sections, and they have plenty of (WAY overpriced) cases and headphones, etc...

Does anyone know if BB is going to put the iPad under the MP3 section of the store or under a computer section?

All the BBs in San Diego I've been to have both the Apple section and the Magnolia part. Boy the Magnolia part is seriously overpriced, even worse then most of the generic stuff there.

I do often buy games and movies once they drop from release prices though. Only because I suck at ordering stuff online before I'm at the "I want it now" mode. :)

Well, I hope this is not the actual answer to my own question, but this is from the macrumors article...

"Q: How will you sell the iPad?
A: We'll start with Apple's direct channels, such as online, retail, education, etc. We'll also pursue indirect sales channels like Best Buy's store-in-a-store concepts."

I guess it doesn't matter much anyway. I would probably just get one from the other BB or Apple stores that are within driving distance.

As much as most people hate Best Buy I would buy my iPad there only so I can get the reward zone points.

If Apple had a frequent buyer club I'd buy it at the Apple store nearest to me.

Yep, I am cheap.

No it's completely free and they charge the same price for Apple products so it's not difference to me where I purchase it other than loyalty really.

that's why you go there to play with the items, then go home and order it online for $100 cheaper w/ free shipping and no tax!

This is a great move on Apple's part. Since they're trying to appeal to people that normally don't use computers they're more likely to find them wandering around a best buy than on a specific mission to the Apple Store (B&M or online).
