Rumor: UK iPad pricing
Website Geeky Gadgets has reported a tip they received on UK iPad pricing. Apple's UK website still lists the cost in US dollars with the disclaimer, "Please note, pricing is in US dollars. International pricing will be announced at a later date."According to Geeky Gadgets' unconfirmed source, the iPad will be priced as follows when it's launched across the pond:
- The 16GB Wi-Fi will be £389
- The 32GB Wi-Fi model will be £439
- The 64GB Wi-Fi model will be £489
As of this writing, those prices put the UK version at a slightly higher cost than those in the US, as £389 is approximately $594.89 (the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad will sell for US$499). This is all completely unsubstantiated, of course, so treat it accordingly.
Thanks, Roland!

Think the price looks about right, did some basic maths on the curent items for sale in the US and UK and average price difference between US and UK prices is 2.68% when you convert the US dollar price to GBP add some good old VAT and we get back to just under £395 price point.
http://ipadnews.co.uk/2010/02/uk-ipad-price-399-looks-about-right/
US official price converted to GBP = £327.26 ( add the average 2.6% UK to USA difference )
UK predicted price no VAT = £336.01
Add some VAT and you got = £394.81
My thoughts on this are that if it is more expensive to buy an iPad in the UK people will just purchase them in the USA and take them over there. If I remember reading somewhere that unlike the iphone, the iPad will ship unlocked (even here in the USA). So it is my thought that the price will end up being the same.
Thanks,
Chris

Well, if genuine then the projected price is better than I was expecting. I would not have been surprised at a price of GBP 499.99 for the basic model, which is the one that I am interested in. However, I do not plan to buy one immediately - later in the year when the inevitable kinks have been worked out will be fine for me.

So, a bit like someone I know told me that someone they know heard from someone what the apple ipad might cost?
Dear TUAW, could you please set up a separate category for this nonsense and exclude it from the usual feeds (which are generally quite good). Cheers.
Dear TUAW. Could you please put the word "rumor" (or "rumour" in this case) in the title when you're posting unsubstantiated information.
Oh, wait....never mind.
no one has mentioned that the UK apple website says nothing about iBooks on the features page. whereas the US store does. does this mean no iBooks for outside the US? with out iBooks is the iPad worth the money?
February 25 2010 at 3:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe iBookstore is US only. As usual, Apple hasn't worked out rights for publishing outside the USA. It's the iTunes store all over again.
February 25 2010 at 8:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah I always find it frustrating how our prices including sales tax are always compared to the US prices which don't contain their sales tax. I suppose US prices don't have the sales tax added because the tax differs from state to state.
well said Lee NYC sales tax was 8.5% so that needs to be added to it before you do any calcs but ppl always exclude it. It does vary from state to state but as i only really visit NYC i use that as my guide.
February 25 2010 at 9:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple tend to be better than most when providing EU prices that match their US ones fairly closely but those in and out of the Eurozone are traditionally higher than the US for reasons often outside of the company's control such as import duty, regulation on different electronic controls, CE registration and authorisation for wireless and electrical products before any VAT is added.
Looking at the other products from apple this seems about right.
A 8gb and a 32gb ipod touch cost $498 on the apple US website. On the UK website the two touches come in at £386.
I'm more intrigued to hear the +3G pricing. My perfect price would be on contract with O2, as my iPhone contract is up in May. I'd love to be able to keep my iPhone as is but instead of upgrading to a new phone (which I don't really need) or getting a lower tariff, I can get either a free or very cut price iPad+3G and use the same unlimited internet I get with my iPhone.
If they do this I think O2 would be able to keep many of the customers they got with the iPhone.
Yep - definitely bull...
By my calculations, the average of the conversion between US and UK ipods and macs (10 products from the home page - excluding iphone and apple tv) is 1.264128400724578
So I would guess at £395 for the 16GB ranging up to £553 for the 64gb one.
I don't know about whether it costs more for cellular licenses over here but on the same basis - 3g ones would be £498 for 16GB up to £656 for the 64gb.
As a developer I'll be getting the 16gb Wi-Fi then use that to gage which 3G model I'll need when they come out.
Plus - check out the apple store in the UK Apple don't seem all that keen on making the prices end with a 9 - some do though, so just a thought...
February 25 2010 at 12:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUsually things are more expensive here in Europe...
till a couple of year ago the conversion was 1$ = 1â¬
totally unfair! now is a bit better but still....
Anyway VAT in UK is 17,5% not 20%
