Rumor: Apple iPad to be delayed?

Over at Fortune, Philip Elmer-Dewitt relays speculation that the iPad might be delayed. Citing a Monday report by Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek, he writes that a manufacturing bottleneck may be affecting iPad production. According to the report, Apple production could be as low as 30% of its target goal (300K units versus its target of a million) and concludes that Apple might delay the iPad launch for a month due to the "...limited number of units available in March."

During Apple's January event, CEO Steve Jobs promised the new iPad device would hit shelves within 60 days, with a 3G-enabled unit to follow approximately 30 days later. To date, Apple has yet to offer a firm release date and it is not yet taking pre-orders just a few weeks before the device is due. Manufacturing delays now joins FCC approvals as a speculative reason for why Apple has not yet announced dates or pre-orders.

So far, this speculation has done precisely nothing to affect Apple stock prices. AAPL is up 4.15 at last check, holding at 208.77.

Thanks, Brett

Update An Apple PR rep told Wired that "iPad will be available in late March."

I have know idea why their stock keeps climbing with such limited device. But I predict, this device will not sell. I'm hoping that it will not get pass through to the FCC (why is it taking so long?). And last, considering how they managed to not create a milion devices of the iPad tells me that they're not the only ones making device with lcd screens this time around.

Delay of one month doesn't need to affect the stock price, even when short-term investors are in a panic.... Something like this doesn't change the value and growth of company like Apple...

Macrumors has included this in its report:

The source and veracity of Misek's information is unknown, although it is perhaps wise to note that Misek predicted that Apple's January media event that saw the introduction of the iPad would also include the introduction of iPhone OS 4.0 and an announcement regarding a Verizon-compatible iPhone for mid-2010, neither of which came to fruition.

"Apple might delay the iPad launch for a month due to the '...limited number of (camera) units available in March.'"

Fixed. Even with a camera it's still going to be lame, though.

Using the 60 day timeframe (they virtually never launch before the outside date) Apple is presumably aiming for an end of March release so they have about 4 weeks yet. A reporter using an analyst as a source? The blind leading the blind.

that would be a pretty silly reason for the stock to tank...

That sound you hear is millions of fanboys wailing in agony at the thought of waiting another month.
