MLB.com At Bat 2010 out now

Baseball season is almost here (Spring training starts this week), and with it comes a brand new version of Major League Baseball's great iPhone app. MLB.com At Bat 2010 is out now on the App Store, and for $14.99, you get the same great app you bought last year: live scores, streaming audio of all the games around the league, and available video of games via an in-app purchase.

There's no lite version yet, but last year MLB released a free version sans audio and video, so if you just want the scores, you can wait and see when that one shows up.

Meanwhile, if you want official baseball info beamed straight to your phone all year long, this app is the way to go. While there are definitely lots of other apps that will hook you up with scores and alerts for a much cheaper price, the MLB app is a quality way to get information straight from the league. Especially if you're going to be following baseball closely all year, the $15, while steep for an iPhone app, is definitely worth it. Personally, I can't wait for this season to start. Play ball!

It seems they no longer allow 99-cent individual game video in-app purchasing, which they made a big deal about last year.
I certainly don't want to pay $100 for a full mlb.tv subscription, but occasionally would like to watch a particular game for a buck or two. Why would they remove this feature?

I just downloaded MLB At Bat 2010 and now that I am googling the Safari workaround, it has confirmed what I was wondering. You click on a button within the MLB app and it launches the audio in Safari. However, while it is in the background for all other apps, you cannot browse in Safari at all. Kind of a bummer but I'll take what I can get as the App is pretty slick.

Do you have to have a subscription to mlb.tv to listen to the games or is the mlb.tv subscription only to watch the games. I really want the app if I can listen to the games without the mlb.tv subscription.

Tim,

Game audio is included in the app. If you have an mlb.tv subscription, you can also watch video (at no extra cost) in the app. Last year, there were also two "free" games shown daily (their choice, not ours) and others were available for $0.99 each. I'm not sure if this was a late season promo or what.

The ESPN Radio app streams audio in the background - same way as this one apparently does, too - with the Safari workaround...

Can anyone clue me in to how to get the background audio feature to work? How do you get it to launch the audio stream in Safari?

Just bought the app...the background audio feature is pretty nice, it just launches the audio stream you select inside Safari, so it can play in the background...and this is worth the upgrade for me alone...let me know if there are other questions..

I really want to buy this app, but it all hangs on whether a separate subscription is required for live video. Can anyone speak on this? Can I view live games with just the purchase of the mlb.com at bat app?

To view all live games, you'll have to have the mlb.tv subscription http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp

Last year they offered 1 or 2 games per day that were live with the app, but you couldn't choose which games you wanted to watch.

I saw "background audio playback" listed as a new feature for 2010. Does that mean in the background while doing other things inside the app, or in the background even after exiting the app? (If the latter, Apple must have given them APIs that it doesn't provide to other developers.)

@ryanerrico If it works like last years MLB app, you get 1 or 2 games per day that are live (you can't choose which 1 or 2, it is random). To get all the games live, you have to have the $100 or $120/ year subscription to MLB.TV.

@Daryl Spitzer, there are lots of apps that run audio in the background. I have several of them.

@Matt What are those apps that run audio in the background? As far as I know, only Apple's built-in iPod app can do that. I'm pretty sure there is still no affordance in Apple's iPhone SDK for background audio.

What stinks is when you buy the $15 app, you only get a couple (sometimes 1) game per day that you can actually watch live on the app. You can buy the others (was $0.99 per game last year). If you have the MLB.TV subscription you get all of them.

I'll probably still buy the darn thing. But wish I could get more for less :)

ITs a good App, worth the $14.99, Me being a Yankee Fan but living in LA And having ATT Uverse as my Cable provider (AKA No BAseball Package) this is the Only salvation I have when it comes to BAseball. It works pretty well 85% of the time.
