AT&T: iPad will be a "Wi-Fi driven product," 3G won't be an issue
If I ran AT&T, I would leave the subject of whether or not the network could handle the iPad's extra 3G traffic demands completely out of the picture, saying something like "we hope so," or "we'll wait and see on how popular it is." But Randall Stephenson, AT&T CEO, seems to be tempting fate. First, he promised that AT&T could handle any demand placed on its network by Apple's iPad, and now he's suggesting that it won't be that bad anyway. In a Reuters article, Stephenson suggests that the iPad will be a "Wi-Fi driven product," and that "there's not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription."
That may in fact be true, and while I'm almost willing to offer him the benefit of the doubt that the majority of browsing on the iPad will be done via Wi-Fi, I also doubt that those who elect to go with 3G won't be using the heck out of it. Maybe AT&T thinks the extra charges from the non-subscription usage will shore up the network, but it certainly sounds to me like Stephenson isn't too worried about AT&T's 3G networks, and from both our experiences with them on the iPhone and the expected popularity of the iPad, he probably should be.
Then again, maybe he's got to say that it won't be a problem -- suggesting that AT&T might not be able to keep up with service demands probably isn't the best thing for the CEO of the company to do. But it sounds like AT&T is underestimating, publicly at least, the kind of 3G network traffic the iPad will bring.

These will eventually replace books on college campus's and should also be used as protable televisions and so on. I cannot believe they not making it data plan usable. This is a huge mistake by apple.

This is quite an irresponsible reply that will fly to his face if the network does indeed get burdened beyond expectations. Unless he has inside information that almost everyone interested in the iPad will go for the wifi model and ditch 3D (at least for now) and/or iPad v1.0 sales won't be so strong to make any visible changes in network usage...
March 04 2010 at 8:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm glad that AT&T has come to grips with the reality of dealing with AT&T.
E.g. that nobody wants another tetherless, subpar, "sure-we-can-fit-in-another-massive-product-despite-being-unable-to-support-the-massive-products-that-we're-already-burdened-by-because-were-it-not-for-them-we'd-have-died-a-slow-celular-death" something ratcheted into their existing craptastic service.
First to predict it: Apple will own its own cellular service within 3 years.
I HATE AT&HELL and never want to agree with them but in this case, I believe they are mostly correct. Apple stated they already have a user base with the iPad; so, while we are on our iPad's, we wont be on our iPhones, which will cause the same amount of traffic on the 3G network. I do agree that the network's strain can't go anywhere but up and I'm sure AT&HELL is so greedy to even put a crazy vast amount of money and time into the network to make it as reliable as their lame ass commercials state.

March 04 2010 at 1:15 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI predict the 3G iPads outsell the Wifi versions 3 to 1.
March 04 2010 at 12:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI agree too, I really don't think that at any one time there will be a significant number of ipads on the cell network. I do think there my be certain laptop/ipad places where people gather with no wifi but even then there's a good chance they'll just be replacing a spot on the network that would have been filled by their iPhone.
March 04 2010 at 12:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt will indeed be a Wi-Fi driven product, at least in the United States, because everyone here knows how bad their 3G data service is.
In Europe and Asia, where they have *working* 3G data networks they will be *hugely* driven by 3G data.
Wonderful... now we have spambots here hawking hair straighteners? Sheesh...
Anyway, I have to say it was a stupid thing for AT&T to say. That said, in my case, it's correct. If I out of range of a WiFi hotspot, I'll more than likely be using my iPhone if I have to get Internet or e-mail access. I can see how maps might be much nicer on the iPad, even without GPS, but I already have a GPS navigation system too. My iPad usage will be limited primarily to the office, the living room, the meditation chamber (yes... the can) and reading on the train.
