iPad to hit stores on Friday, March 26th?

The Examiner is reporting that the iPad will go on sale in the US on Friday, March 26th. They cite "inside sources" with confirmation from an Apple Store manager in Southern California who wishes not to be identified. Daryl Deino, the post's author, claims that internal Apple Retail training will begin on March 10 with commercials starting on March 15. The commercials will emphasize the iPad's ebooks and iBookstore capability.

While Deino states that his sources say the March 26th date hasn't been officially set and is only "very likely" it would allow Apple to hit their end-of-March shipping goal and follow in the likes of other major Friday launches like the iPhone and iPhone 3GS. Deino's sources also state that the 3G iPads won't go on sale until April or May and that people who line up for the WiFi iPad will receive a "special gift."

I had signed up for a workshop for March 26th at my local Apple store and got a notification that it was canceled....Maybe this is due to iPad launch?

This report doesn't make sense.

Apple doesn't send products to stores weeks far in advance to train. Why do they need 2 weeks to train for what is essentially (I don't mean it in a bad way) a big iPod Touch.

If Apple has a ship date, why wouldn't they take pre-orders??

seriously. this seems sooooo outta touch with anything apple does. very unlikely to happen. seeing as most apple employees didnt get to see the iPhone until about 1 HOUR before launch.
plus why would they need to be trained? its the same OS as ipod touch and iphone. silly silly rumors

"Special Gifts" to encourage lines, to encourage free advertising on the news to report on the lines. I can't say that isn't clever.

However, I wonder if there's a fear that there won't be lines for this thing, given that the more desirable version with the 3G won't be available on launch day.

You get a Tee shirt, that says
"I stood in line at the Apple Store for 6 hours to get a iPad"
(instead of walking over to best buy and getting it there)

It's a copy of Jobs' official biography...probably an e-version.

The special gift is having everyone in the store mockingly clap for you as you walk out the door with your new purchase. If it's an option I'll be pre-ordering mine online and avoiding the ridiculous spectacle.

Amen. Unless its a free dock and keyboard, what's the motivation? People clapping because I just spent my hard earned money on a gadget that I wanted? Silly people.

Special Gift? For everyone in line, or only those who get there the Friday before?
