Rupert Murdoch confirms WSJ for iPad
Rupert Murdoch has confirmed, in a Q & A following his announcement of a New York 'metro' section for the Wall Street Journal, that an app for the iPad is under development (WSJ story here, behind the paywall). There's an iPhone app available now, and it's expected that the iPad version will expand upon it, with attention being paid to the iPad's big screen. What's most interesting about this story is the extreme secrecy with which Apple is handing the process. it seems that WSJ developers do have access to a pre-release iPad, which Murdoch confirms is "kept under padlock and key." Not only that, but an Apple employee turns the key every night to confirm that the iPad is where it should be -- locked up tight, safe and sound. Not even preferred developers have earned Apple's full trust.
Apple paranoid? We can't imagine such a thing.

March 04 2010 at 3:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhile I do wish I could pay for one subscription and then read the WSJ on whatever device I fancy, I'm still pleased that I will at least have the opportunity to read it on the iPad. It's a great paper and I'm hoping the iPad version will offer a lot of extra content that will really bring it to life.
On a separate note, it's also sort of nice (I have no idea about its efficacy) to see a paper actually expanding its operations into a new market segment rather than the converse.
Well, great... if you like fanatical right wing propaganda from a creepy fascist foreign national. [IMHO].

March 03 2010 at 1:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't have first hand experience with the WSJ Kindle version of the newspaper, but have read many comments (http://www.amazon.com/The-Wall-Street-Journal/dp/B000FDJ0FS/ref=cm_cr-mr-title) that state it's more expensive to subscribe on the Kindle than purchase a subscription which includes online access.
I'm really hoping this will be different for the iPad version. I hate how much paper the WSJ generates around my house :)
Unlike some competitors (like the NY Times and Financial Times), the WSJ seems to think that its readers should pay twice or three times to read the exact same content in a different place. So for example, I subscribed to the WSJ.com service, only to find that I would have to pay again to read the same articles via the iPhone app. So don't be surprised when they expect us suckers to pay yet again to read the exact same content on their iPad application, too. No thanks.

Sure, it happens all the time when âcompetitionâ is overshadowed by high barriers to entry and near-monopolistic strangleholds on markets. Hopefully, it'll still be the case for this tablet: http://bit.ly/ipad-debacle-examined
You don't have to "pay again" to use the WSJ iPhone app - just login using your WSJ.com username and password and you're all set. Simple as pie.
