iPad ships April 3. Preorders start March 12
Today Apple announced that the iPad will ship in April, writing that the device will "be available in the US on Saturday, April 3, for Wi-Fi models and in late April for Wi-Fi + 3G models. In addition, all models of iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April." Consumers will be able to pre-order their units starting March 12th, with pick-up at Apple retail stores. With Apple's reportedly limited stock, will pre-orders work the way they did with the iPhone 3GS? Namely, will your reservation get you first shot at an iPad pick-up until stocks run out? Or have analysts "misunderestimated" (in the words of a certain American Idol judge) supplies, and there will be iPads available for everyone who wants to lay down the cash, starting at $499 plus local tax? There are no firm answers at this time.
Apple has clarified that iBooks will be available as a free download at the first date of shipping from App Store. iBooks represents the first time that Apple has shipped its own major product (iWork titles will follow shortly thereafter) from App Store. If it proves successful on the iPad, keep your eyes open for a potentially similar distribution move via iTunes for Macintosh software.
TUAW has been guessing April 2nd for the launch since early January. Nice to know we weren't too far off.

If a company wants to sell in their home country (as in they were started here), so be it. You're all just out of luck.
As for the price increase, blame your government....
If it makes you feel better there's a decent chance tax in the US will go through the roof if the health care bill is passed.... So I guess we might be even (price-wise) in the future...
I'm a die-hard Mac enthusiast, well-invested in OS X with my day-to-day life. I was completely sold on an iPad, but a recent video of the MS Courier in action has me completely re-thinking that purchase. I realize the Courier is still at least a half a year out, and pricing has not been discussed, not to mention that the video itself is just a concept... but I've been officially thrown for a loop by its elegance. I know the iPad is for the everyman, in price, function, and style; but there's no Apple iPad Pro option for somebody like me, a tech geek looking for a tablet built from the ground up for a creative professional. I'm still considering the iPad, but... well, let me put it this way - I really, really wanted to see an Apple logo at the end of the Courier video.
Is there anybody else out there in my shoes? What are you doing about it?
I also think the Courier looks amazing; it would be perfect for me as a writer. I'm still very excited about the iPad, though. I plan to buy it as soon as possible and just keep my eye out for news on the Courier. I'm much too impatient to hold off buying either for the rest of the year. If it's cheap enough when it's released I'll buy that too, because I can see the Courier and the iPad both having very specific functions in my life.

I plan to get the WiFi iPad when it's released on April 3rd. I will get Courier when (if) it's released as well. The iPad can serve as an entertainment tablet to have sitting around the house for the whole family. Courier will more than likely end up as a personal tool for myself.
I'd say, if you can swing it cost wise...go for both!
Developers are going to come out with amazing software for the iPad, just like the did for the iPhone. Steve Ballmer rants"Developers, developers, developers!" (like brainwashing or something_ Meanwhile Steveand company is just providing them with the best tools they could possibly have.

You're making yourself look bad.

Home market always gets preference. Has Apple done anything to show you that they don't know how to successfully launch a product?
Like it or not, the US is still the premiere country on Earth. Immigrants didn't spend their life savings to illegally come here because they like the weather.
re the MiFi - I was a little unsure whether the MiFi and WiFi only iPad would serve me as well with GPS as a 3G and WiFi iPad with Location Based Services and mapping?
March 05 2010 at 2:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe Guy makes a solid point! Why do we ALWAYS have to be greatly disadvantaged? At least Apple should release the WIFI model of this big iPod touch. I can see why we're delayed with the 3G but WTF! WIFI IS THE SAME HERE AS EVERYWHERE ELSE!
March 05 2010 at 2:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo WiFi only or WiFi + 3G?
Will the iPad work with my MiFI? If so, I am likely to look for a 32GB WiFi only.
If not, I will likely go down the WiFi + 3G iPad with 16GB of storage.
Any thoughts from the TUAW community on which way to go and how well the MiFi option might work?
The MiFi just broadcasts a standard WiFi HotSpot, so in your case I'd get the 32GB WiFi only one.

March 05 2010 at 12:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMichael Kaye makes a good point in noting that releasing computer products in the manufacturer's home market places 3rd party software developers who are not in that home market at a disadvantage. Whether it is common practice or not isn't the point. I am not sure that Michael really meant that all other markets should receive their iPad shipments before releasing the iPad in the US. "just once" is subject to interpretation.
So other than limited initial supply, and the possibility that the packaging for the product may have different requirements for each international market, why should the US get preferential treatment for an initial product release?
You're right I was just being ironic with the "just once".
Obviously I would love to see a world wide release so everyone (user, developers) etc could benefit equally.
Thanks, michael.
