TomTom submits updated app for Apple review
The makers of the TomTom app for the iPhone have let us know that they've submitted an updated version that adds real-time traffic information, Google local search, and even some secret features the company isn't talking about yet. The TomTom app was eagerly sought out last year, but of late has fallen a bit behind market leader Navigon. This new release, with real-time info and Google local, will give both apps rough feature parity.
The current TomTom app is on sale for U.S. $49.99 at the app store (U.S. maps only) and it includes a "free update to the new version as soon as its available." That would indicate that some or all of the new features will be an extra charge for current owners.
Version 1.3 will be available as soon as it passes through the App Store vetting process.

It would be nice to be able to paste an address into it.

Just driving around town but the integration with the iPhone is great (ipod, contacts, etc.) with obvious room for improvement (better text to speech) and with the new features mentioned above, this is a bargain.

"TomTom will release several updates to its TomTom for iPhone application this year. These new versions of the application will systematically embed an updated safety camera database (for those markets for which safety cameras are already included) as well as some important additional features. These upgrades will be made available free of charge for existing users of the TomTom for iPhone application. More details on the next free upgrade will be communicated soon via our iTunes product page and on iphone.tomtom.com"
Does anyone know how long the sale will last?

You have misinterpreted the text Mel. There is no indication from that text that any new features will be subject to an additional charge. And TomTom is quick to clarify that point if you contact their Customer Services. Please don't start scare mongering without any factual basis. That text simply says new customers buying at the sale price will be entitled to a free upgrade. Nothing more, nothing less. It's a real stretch to suggest that somehow indicates longstanding customers will have to pay.
Sometimes being an early adopter really sucks. I paid $100 for this and had to download Canada as well. I would love to go to Canada but never have so I don't like the fact that I have to devote 400mb of space to put it on my iPhone.
I'll never be an early adopter again.
That reminds me - I hafta set an iCal reminder for March 13. :-) î
Okay. Ya, I'll get the iPad but right after that no more of this early shit. I'm done.
Is that a photoshopped screen capture from the app...?
March 06 2010 at 7:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think the "get free upgrade" message is missleading, it doesn't explicitly say that existing users will have to pay for the upgrade, so I wouldn't worry about it, it's very unlikly TomTom are going to charge for an upgrade. Unless of couse they plan to add any subscription services, but I don't see them giving this away to new users but forcing exiting ones to pay.
March 06 2010 at 6:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell all I can say is that TomTom's app update should be for free. If they want to charge they should do so for map updates. If they are going to include some features at the $49 level that were not there before they should then provide that as a free upgrade tonthe ones who paid the same or more. In a case like this I would rather just buy a stand alone unit than having to pay for each upgrade. Let it be equal and fair for any one who paid the same price

What? No. That's stupid. There's no way in iTunes Connect to do this. Come on guys.
Well, I suppose there *could* be a way of making this happen with an in-app purchase that would be standard for users who have installed the app after a certain date.
Do I think it's likely? Heck no.
