Like iPhone, iPad ad premieres at Oscars

Talk about big premieres. Like it did with the iPhone and its "Hello" ad, Apple used the Oscars as the platform to debut its iPad commercial. The ad, set to the background of The Blue Van's "There Goes My Love," shows the iPad being used in a variety of ways: viewing a movie, reading an eBook, displaying photos, editing an iWork document and viewing email among them. The ad follows Apple's recent announcement that pre-orders for the device will be accepted beginning March 12, with shipments slated for April 3.

Here's a link to the ad at Apple's site. The ad is also embedded in the second half of this post.

As we noted on Twitter earlier, Apple chairman Steve Jobs was spotted on the red carpet before the awards... maybe he brought his iPad with him.

Wow, the typing experience must be really, really bad, because they almost never show it. When they do, like when The Steve did on stage, it looks really awkward.

@PFar I hope that your prediction is true - We all envisage a perfect WWW built on open standards, but for the time being, this is not the case. I think the move to a open standards based web will be long after the expected lifespan of an iPad of the current generation. And I am talking about the entire (or a large majority of the) web, not a few websites like youtube or virgin. I don't think Apple has the market power to change the web, so there is nothing wrong with supporting Flash for a couple of years, or let adobe develop a plugin and let the customer decide. I have never experienced flash problems on my mac or PC or even on Linux it is running fine, when used for normal purposes. This leads me to believe that this is a political/economical decision from Apple, wrapped in a strategic 'ahead of the curve' message. Apple has always provided an alternative on it's recent 'ahead of the curve' decisions (usb floppy disk for imac, usb dvd drive for MB Air), I think it is at least suspicious they don't provide a flash opt-in alternative for a device that is designed to provide the best web experience ever.

Lots of people on Twitter were disappointed with the Oscars. What's your take? I talked about it on my show. http://bit.ly/1VZKFN

I was watching the Oscars with some friends and the first comment I heard after the iPad commercial was, "That iPhone is huge!" Mindful of that, I think it will be interesting to see just how effectively Apple can market this product. To the uninformed it almost looks like a parody of Apple's existing lineup.

The commercial makes me want this even more, but I'm still wondering if I'd actually use it as much as I think I would.

If you want to download it and frame-by-frame it in QuickTime Player, here's one way: http://apple.newbox.org/article.php?story=download_ipad_ad

It's a shame the film didn't win more, it certainly deserved more awards than some of the others.

No it is not.

Besides what are we talking about anyways?
Hardware? That is exactly the same as a PC nowadays. No difference here.
Software? Except FinalCut all the software is third party software (a lot runs both Windows and Mac, like Avid) and a lot of the animation software is even running on linux clusters (as far as I recall).

So either you are saying that FinalCut is the tool that made everything possible or you are saying all the third party software could not have been created for another plattform?
In both cases I would still stand with my initial statement .. it is a computer, a tool .. nothing that can be held responsible for the outcome.

Did anyone notice that the time shows 9:41 the whole time, I guess everyone (in the commercial) is using their iPads at exactly the same times.
