Macworld UK estimates iPad pricing, late April availability in the Blighty

Our English-speaking friends across the pond have been anxiously awaiting pricing and availability dates for the iPad. Macworld UK's Nick Spence notes that both the Wi-Fi and 3G models will be available in late April, meaning that developers in the UK who want to get their hands on an iPad earlier may have to consider flying to the US on April 3rd.

Spence reported that Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Switzerland will also see the iPad shipping in late April.

Based on the exchange rate for both the US Dollar and UK Pound Sterling, Macworld UK estimated the following prices for the iPad models:
  • iPad Wi-Fi: £417 (16GB); £500 (32GB); £584 (64GB)
  • Wi-Fi + 3G: £526 (16GB); £610 (32GB); £693 (64GB)
The estimated prices also add the 17.5% Value Added Tax, which is included in cost of goods in the UK.

It should be £334 ex VAT for the base model at the current exchange rate.

Or £392 Inc VAT.

That isn't including any import charges, but surely they have to import into the US as well, it isn't made there... so the cost wouldn't be that different.

I'm not including 'Apple Tax' however, which is the main thing we have to worry about.

Pretty accurate estimate compared to swiss pre-order prices found here: http://www.nextway.ch/index.php/cPath/28
The 64 Gb WiFi at CHF 959 converts to £592

The thing that peeves me is this:

"Our English-speaking friends across the pond "

Invented the fracking language, no less

I think the iPad will be introduced at £349, including VAT, for the base model. Apple doesn't need to match the Mac Mini, just because the conversion rate would be the same, and keeping the price below 350 makes sense from a marketing perspective.

Maybe I'm just hoping...

People seem to be forgetting that Apple sell a product for $599 already in the Mac Mini which comes to £510.

I'd expect the iPad price to be identical otherwise they will need to adjust their Mini price. Can't have two products with identical dollar figures coming in at different £ figures.

Anyone decent at math should be able to deduce the other prices from there.

I don't know for sure but there's a chance the import duty for a Mac Mini and an iPad would be different. It's hideously complex to calculate what the duty is but even the smallest differences can land you in a different category and paying a different rate.

I found this out when looking to import a DV camera. Any model that included a firewire input was classed as a VCR and cost a lot more to import then one with just firewire output.

I had it from about £400 to about £660 when I did a statistical analysis based on current Apple prices a few weeks ago (here: http://www.oakinnovations.co.uk/blog/2010/01/29/uk-apple-ipad-price-cost-pricing-a-statistical-prediction/ ). So a bit cheaper than MacWorld. Although given the fluctuations in exchange rates all around the world, it could be a pretty big swing either way.

Nice work, makes a very interesting read.

I'd send that to one of the UK Mac-a-zines.

Hey, it's all written in the Apple's press release. All other 9 countries have no exact launch day and price... but the websites says "incredible prices".

Way too high. I'm sure happy that we don't have VAT in the USA.
