Will iPad be missing some iPhone apps?
Wired noticed that there are some notable exceptions among the announced iPad apps, including Stocks, Calculator, Clock, Weather and Voice Memos. These apps could be available for download through the App Store. However, blogger Kevin Fox suggested last month that could hint toward a possible Dashboard implementation on the iPad. He argues that these apps, with the exception of Voice Memos, were originally Dashboard widgets to begin with.
Fox theorizes that a five-finger pinch would bring forth a Dashboard with these apps and a second would send them back to the background. This is not the first Dashboard theory that's been floated for the iPad.
It's an intriguing idea, and I can see that being part of a future version of the iPhone/iPad OS. For now, I hope that these apps are available as a free download, or are already pre-loaded but on a second screen. The worst case scenario is that Apple will charge a premium for these basic apps, similar to the way they're charging iPod touch users for upgrades. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did either.

I wonder how hard it would be for a developer to do a black-box rewrite of Dashboard using the iPad SDK. I suspect the answer is "not very hard at all", given that web views are a standard UI widget, and that most of the dashboard-specific features used by widgets have made their way into the standard WebKit build.

Haha, I was trying to think of a clever way to put that.. Well played. Surely there'll be an option to customize the gesture?

Good thinking there, i'm glad you aren't running Apple, otherwise we'd only have whatever you felt like using. I suppose you only have a bicycle because it allready gets you from place to place so why waste your money on a car? Or you bought a car that does everything like goes off road, parks in compact parking spots, has 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive and is electric only, except when its gas. Oh and its a race car that goes 200 mph, plus its a monster truck that has 10 ft tall tires. Right? Cause every device you own has to do EVERYTHING.
Makes sense to me...
@Jordan. Yea ok. we'll see how unbusy i am in a year when im still using my iPad on a daily basis and decide to upgrade to v2.
if i use my iphone daily for less than phone calls, why wouldnt i use the larger screen daily in stead of always cracking open the macbook pro? think outside your small box. please dont say im the one in the box or blinded by the apple light. i actually see the full potential of the device and the marketing behind it. i see people every single day that want to know more about it and are always asking me as if i would know anything that hasnt been reported on already LOL.
get real and dont buy it. then watch the rest of us enjoy it.
A couple if those, like Stocks and Weather are likely gone. The reason being that better experiences can be had over the web.
As to the Clock I'd have to think something will be there to replace it. I actually use that feature alot on my iPhone especially the stop watch feature. So I'm really hoping it is still there.
As to the other apps becoming Dashboard widgets that is a mixed bag in my mind. I never really got into Dasboard on my Mac. It might be viable though and could actually be useful if that becomes a way to expose multitasking for very light apps. All in all though I'm not convinced this is a good model for a tablet.
As to things like calculator there are to many solutions on app store that are better so it is not a huge concern. Given that though I could see Apple overhauling the calculator to deliver a massive improvement using the larger iPad screen. A full graphing calculator with programability would be nice. It would be even better if that programability came from Ruby or Python.
Right now the missing apps are a mixed bag. Not having a system supported clock is huge but the others far less of a problem.

I think the first few comments nailed it.
By not including those default apps, they also avoid providing unfair competition for third party developers, such as The Weather Channel's weather app, AOL's Daily Finance etc. It must be fairly hard for devs to profit within those app categories, since many people just use Apple's default apps.
You have a deal. You keep worrying about what it can't do.
I'll focus on what I can do with it. Hopefully we both enjoy our roles.
Five Finger Palm of Death pinch? Wasn't that in Kill Bill?
March 08 2010 at 5:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou're thinking of the Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.
...which is a pretty good idea for an app.
Five-finger pinch? How about double-clicking the home button?
