I'm OK, You're OK: It's cool to be an early iPad adopter

The early adopter tax, along with any associated tech risks, has not escaped the notice of most tech enthusiasts. In the end, it's not much of a factor. We don't buy early because it's a good deal. We don't buy early because it's fiscally sound. We buy early because the technology is cool and we simply cannot or do not want to wait for our preciousssssss to finally come home with us.

We are the People Who Stand In Line.

In my case, this is a hereditary condition. I blame my father, who would bring home the latest gadgets to an adoring family. We'd gather around the latest technology, glowing in its radiance, having an utter blast using toys that no one had ever heard of, let alone bought. We were the first family on the block (and possibly in the state) to have a microwave, a fax machine (the size, may I point out, of a small car), a personal computer, or a hand-held programmable calculator.

It wasn't just cool. It was awesome.

Thank you Dad, for being an early adopter. Thank you for showing me the way of the technology geek. Thank you for teaching me that you have to live life in the moment -- because if you don't seize today and play with it, tomorrow will never come.

Sure, something better and cheaper is always going to come along some day. Sure, the bugs will work their way out and the prices will work their way down. But if you don't hop aboard the adoption train, you're never going to get to Techsville.

Me? I'm going to buy a first-day ticket and have my fun from the get-go.

I remember we had one of the first color TVs when I was a kid. My dad wasn't rich, in fact he grew up dirt-poor as a family of 12 in OK. But he really wanted to get a color TV, and the green grass (and greenish skin-tones) were glorious. The real funny thing was - once purchased - he would be unhappy if we watched shows in B&W. God forbid "The Maltese Falcon" would be broadcast...

Uhm, use a credit card with price protection. I used my Amex gold to buy the original iPhone when it launched and when Steve dropped the price $200, I got $100 from Apple and $100 from Amex. No probs. I was happy, because the utility I got from the iPhone was worth the $200, even if I had not gotten the money.

Enderle saying to not pre-order just pushed me to decide to pre-order it. He continues to show he has no clue, no credibility and is a sad old a** clown.

What people forget is that compatibility and connectivity between two totally different devices is very important. My iPhone just syncs with my Mac -- no hassle, and interchange of info is seamless and silky smooth.

The first time I tried transferring data from a Nokia (no Mac connectivity) to a Sony Ericsson (connected to Mac with iSync), I had to sync my Nokia to my brother's WinPC via Outlook, then sync the SE to the WinPC and then sync the SE with the Mac. Sounds simple, but the Nokia->WinPC->Sony Ericsson was one of the most frustrating experiences (top 5) I've had in nearly 30 years of using computers.

The Orange M5000 (HTC something) was such a PITA that I sold it on within four weeks of acquiring it. My iPhone 3GS is fully jailbroken and even without iTunes, I can move files around and between the Mac & iPhone using 3rd party apps without any hassle.

I've been an early adopter of all things Mac and I can't count the number of times I've been burned. First Newton, first iMac, first iTouch. This is one "first" I'm going to sit out. I'll let others discover the "joys" of what this device can't do, complain about it until Apple hears them (but the voice of the consumers and the ears of the iSteve are getting farther and farther apart as it becomes less about the user and more about profit at the expense of the user experience *cough* *iPhone!* *cough*)

I have had an original iPhone for two and a half years and still haven't seen a phone I'd replace it with, even considering the stuff that Apple does that people get all offended by. There simply aren't enough negatives to counter all the positives.

The Nexus One would be my next choice if there wasn't an iPhone.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world outside the USA don't even know how much this thing is going to cost and we're already queuing up to buy it!

My kids all grew up seeing their Dad (me) buying all sorts of gadgets & gizmos: from the first MSX "computer" (still have it somewhere in the cellar), ColecoVision console with wicked joysticks, two Atari STs before progressing to more than half a dozen fully functioning and in-daily-use Macs (bypassing the Windows revolution!) and a whole load of other stuff which my wife generally refers to as junk.

My kids beat me to the iPod, but I beat them to the iPhone and we're waiting to see who gets the first iPad (me, I reckon), whilst one of my sons is waiting to grab my iPhone 3GS come July.

Come on, Apple! We want firm prices and release dates for the UK.

My father died in 1986. He was a systems analyst who had been in computers from the 50s. He took us through the SDC computer once when the computer was the size of the building, or so it seemed. His last computer was an Apple IIe....I too always think how he would have loved all this new stuff.... technology sufficiently advanced as to be indistinguishable from magic, to paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke

I will be ordering iPads tomorrow at 5:31 as well. I know my role, and do it well

"there's not much evidence for Enderle's assertion"

That's an understatement and should be included on every site that quotes Rob Enderle.

I had a much snarkier version of that sentiment in the post, but Erica (who is a NICE person and a GOOD person and knows that there are real people out there behind the screens) insisted that I leave it out.

*sigh*
