iPad adds Screen Rotation lock. Recumbent users scream "Finally!"
Apple has finally added a screen rotation lock to one of its iPhone OS computing products. The button, which appears on the side of the new iPad will lock the device into its current orientation, preventing the unit from responding to re-orientation events. For everyone who has ever tried to play a game while lying down on a couch or a bed, let me say: Thank you, Apple! Finally, we'll be able to lock our orientation in place and not worry about an overly helpful system trying to do its best to keep up with the way we hold our screens. If you've ever tried reading a webpage, scanning mail, or just playing a game on the iPhone while lying on your side, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Can't wait for this to appear on the next iPhone as well!
Thanks, Attila – hat tip to The Loop

March 14 2010 at 10:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhmm.. the iPhone already have a lock mechanism. Or mine is broken :P
Help me test if its just mine, or if its a feature.
1- Open Safari.
2- Hold your iPhone facing you, in a vertical position.
3- Turn it Clockwise (horizontal position). Safari should reajust.
4- Turn it Clockwise (back to vertical position).
The screen should be locked on the horizontal position, even tho its facing you vertically.
Works for every application for me, since day one.
Sure, but that doesn't work in every app, and it 'locks' it the in landscape rather than vertical mode. It only works because the iPhone generally doesn't expect you to hold it upside down. Apple have made a big thing about there being 'no right way up' for the iPad, so that doesn't help it.
March 13 2010 at 9:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt DID used to be labeled as a Mute-switch on the official Apple site, right? Or am I just remembering that wrong?
Thinking about it - I think I do prefer it as an orientation-lock over a mute-switch. A hardware mute-switch is really only a necessity for the phone. Being able to turn off the ringer quickly is crucial. Being able to mute the movie or game you're playing - not so critical. I like that they switched the switch. Having an orientation-lock will be a very useful option.
Yesterday evening, while watching NBC's "The Marriage Ref", I noticed
Maria Menounos(celebrity fact person) was resourcing what appeared to
be an Apple iPad for her internet search queries. The iPad was being
held up by, what looked to be a glass column of-sorts. How were the
peripherals able to connect to the iPad? Would this indicate some
deviation from the current iPhone OS? It looked like it was being
displayed as a desktop replacement, could this be true?
It would be lovely to be able to remap this button for other uses as well. Imagine being able to set it to turn WiFi on/off without having to go into Settings. Or even have one setting for a press and another for a hold. On my HTC Hermes, I have the PTT button set to a press turning on the flashlight and a hold rotating the screen. For the iPad, a press could lock the screen orientation, and a hold could be mapped to whatever you want.

I think a rotation lock is nice but I like the mute function a bit more. Or Bluetooth on/off, or flight mode on/off. I guess Apple has more plans for that switch.

March 12 2010 at 2:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe really want to buy the iPad, but not until there is a version with an integrated cam. I realize this is about portability, and not having an oversized kind of camera device. We skype a lot and I am sure that will be in the next generation or next version released. I wish Apple would have put it in this 1st generation version, so we could buy it now...
