Boo Hoo! SimplifyMedia dropping products and changing direction

The problem is, we just don't know where they're going. In a Saturday blog post, the company announced it is "...taking a new direction" and won't be offering their current apps to new users.

SimplifyMedia has been offering free software for computer-to-computer and iPhone-to-computer music sharing over the internet. Using the iPhone app, you could connect to your computer at home and stream albums, playlists or songs without any complicated firewall setups. A newer version of the software also allowed remote access to your iPhoto library.

It also looks like the company is going to slowly sunset current customer accounts but will continue to keep them functioning for at least another 3 months.

The Simplify iPhone app has been removed from the App Store, and the company says new account creation will be disabled soon.

I don't have any idea where the company is headed, but the current product will be missed. SimplifyMedia was offered for Mac, PC and Ubuntu.

[Thanks to Robert for the tip]

Well sounds like they were bought by Google!

A lot of Simplify Media and ORB users have moved over to Subsonic, and never looked back.

The Subsonic streaming server is available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and is packed with features (like podcast subcription, jukebox mode, last.fm integration, tag editing, transcoding). In addition to the clean and fast web interface, there are iPhone, Android and AIR apps available.

Check out the screenshots, videos and demos on http://subsonic.org

I use SM all the time — at work and on my iPhone. So I will have to find some other software to access/stream my library. Any suggestions?

I really liked this app. I hadn't used it in a while. But I always liked knowing it was available. I will def miss it. I hope another company makes an app similar to it and soon!

Definitely not a buyout. This tech is piece of cake to develop, so Apple would do it themselves if they wanted, not like they don't have the resources to do so. A buyout then would only make sense as a way to acquire customers, but since simplify media decided to give the boot to all of its customers, this is not the case either. So probably they realized the centralized streaming model is not sustainable, or they just got tired of it.

Switched to Here, File File! a couple of weeks ago and havent looked back. Doesn't have the ability to play multiple files in a row like simplify but does give you ALL of your documents and files on your computer.

As some said above, and i hope it's true; this sounds like an Apple buyout to me.

It was a cool idea, worked decently over wiFi, not so practical over 3g. Sorry to see it go, but I didn't use it because it was impractical.

Too Bad...

I've never understood why I can see my shared iTunes Library from iTunes on my IPod Touch ... but not play it! (like I can with every other computer on the same network!)

Simplify Media was great way to access music I suddenly wanted to hear while doing stuff around the house. And listening to podcasts as they arrived without filling up my iPod.

Oh well...

Just a little cash...

Saw this on their blog. I guess "Last" is in the eye of the beholder...

10 iPhone Apps That Last
(December 2009)

Using Simplify Music 2, you can access your entire iTunes library from anywhere (so long as your computer back home is on). You can also share libraries with friends. It’s the tip of the iceberg for this kind of technology... $7.99 is a steal for Simplify Music 2.

I think most of us don't care about the cost of the app - but my question is - what other solutions are there?

Simplify makes it easy to listen to all my music at home, from work or on my iPhone.

What other options are there that don't require re-configuration of my router?
