Rumor: iPad in-store reservations may be over 40,000

If you've got a pickup reservation and you happen to know your ID number for it -- and you made your reservation either at the very beginning of the day yesterday, or at the very end of the day -- let us know in the comments and we'll start doing some arithmetic. We'll also try to cross-confirm this number with other little birdies from the retail front. Update: Looks like there's no tracking info on the registration emails. Drat.

Update #2: Separate confirmation on the estimate for Saturday & further counts lead us toward about 50,000 reservations during the course of the weekend.

you mean they're too high or too low? I see them kinda low for a new Apple device after the iPhone media frenzy.

Isn't it easier just to have FedEx deliver it to your DOOR ?

There are three reasons I reserved rather than pre-ordered:

1) I want to try it out before opening the box

2) I'd rather go to the mall for an hour than stay home all day on a Saturday

3) My understanding is that you can't return stuff purchased online to Apple stores

When I pre-ordered my 3GS they had 2 lines in front of store pre and those waiting to buy with out pre-order. They had a list checked it twice that you had a pre-order and I was in and out of store in 15 minutes. So glad I pre-ordered early yesterday all this BS on the web about it being a waste of money and a apple flop so glad i will have my 2 iPads bright and early sat morning the 3rd. I am bringing my mifi and will have my contacts (mobile me) on it before i finish my check out........

I spoke with a Apple Store employee here is Indianapolis to make sure that the iPads were guaranteed reserved and he said that you would need to bring a print out of your reservation and get there between 9am and 3pm. He said they will have a sticker on the reserved iPads and at 3:01pm they would remove the sticker and sell them first come first serve.

I initially placed a pre-order, because there was no reserve option at 8:30am, which is really what I wanted to do. I did end up finding the reserve link around hour later and got it setup too.

After talking to the store employee today and getting conformation that I would have a reserved iPad waiting for me. I decided to cancel my pre-order. I plan on getting to the store about two hours early with my camp chair, Nintendo DS and Coffee

I reserved mine at about 5PM and got the return email at 535EST. That said still on the fence if I will actual get it or not. Beyond that will wait and see, if a shortage develops and the aftermarket price goes up between now and then well you know how that goes.

I am guessing they will have a list of apple IDs, and the name on those accounts. Probably need to show an ID of your own (license, school id, etc.) then they will cross you off the list, and get your iPad to you, swipe your CC and you are out!
