10,000 iPad pre-orders per day

Daniel Tello
, a Venezuelan blogger-analyst who writes about Apple has been tracking iPad order numbers submitted by volunteers since March 12 at 8:30 a.m. ET, when Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPad. Based on his calculations Apple passed the 180,000 unit mark on Wednesday and is now averaging about 10,000 pre-orders a day.

"I think sometime during Friday, perhaps before noon, the counter should roll to 200,000 units pre-ordered," he told Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune. Tello's calculations are based on a precise count of order numbers and an estimate of how many of them were non-iPad orders.Tello's estimates only include pre-orders and not iPads reserved at Apple Stores for in-store pickup. According to BoyGeniusReport, those in-store reservations averages about 700 per the 222 US Apple Stores. That's a grand total of 155,400 in-store reservations in addition to today's supposed total of 200,000 pre-orders. Not too shabby for a device that for almost all of the people ordering one have never held.

If a total of almost 350,000 iPads have been pre-ordered/reserved it makes some of the lower estimates of first year iPad sales seem ridiculous. However, for now all we have to go on is these educated guesstimates. Apple won't be officially announcing any iPad numbers until their next conference call.

Dell's net income is $1.43B not $350M, as Gogo suggested. Dell's revenue is $52B.

Apple is substantially more profitable than Dell, though, with net income of $9.4B on revenue of $47B. That is according to these links:

If these numbers are reasonably accurate then there may be a very long waiting time for new purchases because of demand vs. supply (like the original iPhone release or the Wii Console).

Since there aren't buying restrictions on the iPad, I expect eBay will be selling them at a premium.

So, with all this talk of iPad, will TUAW have a new app to release when it hits doorsteps and shelves everywhere?

If this estimate of 350k is right, then Apple will probably sell 500k iPad at launch. Assuming Apple markets the iPad heavily and we have a decent holiday season, they can sell 2m units in 2010.

At an average price of $700 and 25% after-tax profit margin, that would equal out to $350mm in pure profit for selling iPads alone. $350mm is what Dell makes in an entire year selling EVERYTHING.

I think I should buy more Apple stocks...

the ipad is selling, but trying to determine how many based off order numbers is ridiculous

The source for these numbers has a history of very accurate estimates on previous Apple releases. If I'm not mistaken he has beat every other analyst at being closest to announced numbers several times over.

If those numbers hold true that's pretty impressive. I look forward to seeing the actual numbers and the breakdown by model at the next earnings call.

I love apple products but personally I would buy one without holding it first... and even then am waiting for the iPad Pro (128Gb, camera, USB)... I might be waiting a while anyway as I'm starting to budget for a replacement MBP later this year as well. I find it not at all surprising that they've waited to announce new MacBooks until after the iPad is out...
