Plastikman releases SYNK, an app for his tour

It's a free download, and while at a concert on a free Wi-Fi network, the app will receive real-time information about the music and video during the show, and even give access to some of the samples being used. Outside of shows, the app says it will work as an "atmospheric location shifter," using the iPhone's microphone and headphones to wrap users "in a Plastikman environment." Whatever that means.
The point here is that this is an app actually built for a specific location, adding in specific funcationality when you're on a certain Wi-Fi network. That's a very cool idea. Even if you don't have Plastikman tickets (looks like he's only playing Coachella and one show in Detroit here in the US), the idea of location-specific software is one we'll probably see come up again in the future.

Didn't Nine Inch Nails do this last year on the Lights In the Sky tour?

I love the way Mr. Hawtin is pushing technology forward, what with Ableton and everything, but I don't think this is good for the music community. Shows are for losing yourself in the music, not fiddling around with your phone. It's bad enough as it is with everyone taking photos and videos on their phones, but now this?

The Pittsburgh Penguins also does this with a local wi-fi and the YinzCam app.

Haven't we already seen something a little like this from Apple itself? The 'Starbucks' tab that could appear in the iTunes store when you were in a Starbucks location, and which let you see what songs were currently playing there/purchase them seems similar, if on a smaller scale.

damn, as cool as the idea might be, i'm predisposed against it. this plastikman who makes godawful music made the venerable british dubstep producer/dj plastikman change his name to plastician. grr. don't like.
ok, connotations aside? sounds interesting.

That "one show in Detroit" is actually a 3-day festival on its 10th anniversary called Movement aka DEMF aka Detroit Electronic Music Festival. It has had a very interesting history and it honors the fact that Detroit is the home of Techno music. Plastikman will be closing the first night of the festival held on Memorial Day Weekend at Hart plaza.
