Report: One-third of iPad buyers will read books, newspapers

comScore recently polled 2,176 iPad customers regarding their plans for the new device. Not surprisingly, one-third of them said that they intend to use it to read books and newspapers.

Specifically, 37% of respondents said that they're "likely" to read books on their iPads, and 34% said they intend to use it to read newspapers and magazines. Drilling down further, comScore identified that those who already own Apple products (they call them "iOwners") are more likely to pay for newspaper and magazine digital subscriptions -- a full 52%.

Among all the people I've discussed the iPad with, the vast majority intend to use it just as I do -- as a leisure device. I see it being the thing that's left on a coffee table to be picked up in the evening for watching videos, leisure web browsing and reading books and magazines. Today I sit on the couch with my wife while my MacBook Pro singes my legs and takes up too much room. An iPad the size of a magazine will be much more pleasant to manage and pass back-and-forth while we relax together at the end of the day.

Once additional apps are released, increasing its functionality, there will be more and more roles for it to fill. Mark my words: It's going to be a huge hit.

"the vast majority", i.e., 'most'.

Only 37%? That seems low to me.

I want comic books on the iPad. Marvel has a sweet digital distro thing that I would LOVE on an iPad.

I truly hope the iPad is shareable "on a coffee table" as suggested in this post. The problem is that many useful apps require login. However, if iPad follows in footsteps of iPhone and iPod Touch, sharing an iPad with family would mean lots of logouts/logins.

I fully intent to use it as a book reader to being with.

Then again I don't necessarily "purchase" books (project gutenberg has enough good books to last you a life time).

I also don't see myself purchasing magazines if they are not at least 50% below their news stand price.

I have the Sony reader and will change over for most reading. The key is battery life. I read a book on the iPhone as a test and battery life was much more of a factor than small screen. If eInk drops price do 5-6" books are a hundred dollars they have a product. Else they are toast. Btw the cheaper Sony readers are still the best reads. The ability to read emails and other books other than Sony of Amazon is key.

But I still wonder if reading on an iPad will be as pleasant & easy as with a real reader with virtual ink. There must be a difference.

Many people think that's all they'll use their iPads for, but it's hard to resist when your bank advertises their latest app, or your favourite fast food place, gym, schools, etc. have their own apps that are quicker and more robust than web sites.

I'd love if my cable company released a tv guide/ universal remote app (how's THAT for outside the box). Using an iPad as a digital picture frame when it's just sitting there is one thing, but what if there was a daytime clock app with weather, news ticker, stocks, RSS feeds, AND picture slideshow.

What about a personal trainer app that connects wirelessly to your scale and shopping list, Nike+, and gym equipment. If this thing wirelessly spoke to the GPS in your iPhone and the music in your iPod. Your cyber trainer could "watch" you and give the perfect amount/type of support needed.

What about an app that just becomes a home head unit for your iPhone lines, transferring calls to the larger device via WiFi or Bluetooth.

People will be lured in by friends talking about their newest awesome apps.

"One-third of iPad buyers will read books, newspapers..."

"The other two-thirds will be looking at porn."
