A unified mailbox coming to the iPhone -- what a concept!

If the supposed note from El Steve-o is to be believed, the iPhone is getting a unified mailbox at some future date. Don't you wonder what Apple was thinking when it wasn't in the original iPhone plan?

In Mac OS X, I like seeing all of my email on one page, and with a quick click I can look at any email account segregated from the others -- easy peezy.

You would have thought that the famous Apple GUI designers would apply the same logic to the iPhone, but for more than two years I've had to really struggle to see what is coming in on 3 different accounts. I'm tapping more than the Titanic's radio operator just to see what email I have.

I hope the fix comes soon, and that it winds up on the iPad as well. The lack of a unified or universal mailbox is one of those strange Apple decisions that is hard to understand. The lack of cut, copy, and paste was another seemingly bone-headed choice that Apple finally got right. Now Microsoft seems to be drinking the same kool-aid with its upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS. The company says no copy/paste will be in the phone OS, and they're telling users they don't really need it anyway. Sure.

Apple makes a lot of great choices and we love Apple products, but every so often they seem to miss a big feature. After a lot of bad feelings from customers, they finally make it right. Usually. Sometimes. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for that unified inbox, and switching frantically between mail accounts. Grrrrr.

Can you think of some other big missing items? A camera in the iPad comes to mind...

If the supposed note from El Steve-o is to be believed, the iPhone is getting a unified mailbox at some future date. Don't you wonder what...

How about call recording?

It's something I miss from using on my old Sony Ericsson. I used to regularly record calls to clients to make sure I had something to back up any statements made or deals agreed upon.

And of course the obvious - Multi-tasking for third party apps.

I don't care if you don't need it.... because I DO!
Currently multi-tasking using Kirikae and backgrounder to (acceptably) do the job, but a native OS version would be much more stable and knowing Apples love for all things simple, would no doubt be much easier to use than the current solution.

What I'd like to see is per account signatures. That way, I can send from my personal account without having all my work details in the sig.

My wish list includes:

1. Better bluetooth functionality -- A2DP for my stereo headphones, and support for my bluetooth keyboard

2. Background applications

3. Templates in paste and cut

4. A silent switch that is customizable to silent everything!

For those of you who look forward to a unified mailbox on the iPhone, why wait? I have a unified inbox on my iPhone today. I set up an anonymous gmail account as an Exchange server with push on my iPhone. I forward all my accounts to the gmail account.

To send mail from different email addresses, just set up POP accounts on the iPhone for each email address using invalid POP server and login information. Be sure to set Fetch to manual for each POP account.

I get access to the same unified mailbox on my Mac. I set up OS X Mail (Leopard and Snow Leopard both work) to access the gmail account using IMAP for real time use, and, I also set up a second account in OS X Mail for the same gmail address as a POP account to regularly archive all messages (except trash and spam) to my local machine - if gmail fails I still have a copy of all my messages.

If I need to access mail and I don't have access to my Mac or iPhone, I can still access everything using the gmail web site and anything I do there will sync with both my Mac and iPhone as soon as they are back on the internet.

By the way, you can also set up push calendars and contacts through Google using the same account on the iPhone and push calendars to iCal on your Mac. You can also see all of your calendar information using Google Calendar, just plan on using iCal or OS X Mail to respond to invitations, Google calendar and the gmail web site do not decode iCal invitations sent as attachments in email messages.

You can find set up instructions for pushing Google services here: http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/

By the way, I do not work for Google, I just use some of their services. This is the first time I have ever added a comment. I hope someone finds it useful. I cut my time spent on mail by half since going to this set up a couple of months ago.

Good Luck!

- Brian

Haven't you learned by now, "missing features are not a problem, they are a market strategy"

Now watch. This is going to be some kind of half-assed unified inbox implementation that will piss off even more people...

Not to beat a dead horse, but: Flash, Flash, Flash

I saw a TV demo for a new 4G smartphone on Sprint this week that had Flash support. Maybe it's just me, but as a photographer I'd like to be able to view photography websites, which almost all are built with Flash galleries.

I do love my iPhone. But I think this is a deal killer for me regarding the iPad...

how many of those galleries use the mouse-hover feature of Flash for navigation? guessing most if not all.

now tell me where the cursor is on an iPad or iPhone. and tell me how you make that cursor hover over a part of the screen without being a 'click'.

thanks!
