Whoops -- somebody at Apple accidentally jumped the gun on sending a few iPad titles to the App Store. A few HD titles have snuck into...

No, they're appending "HD" to the iPad versions of the games because you can't append "iPad" to the name of your app. Yet everyone wants you to know that they have an iPad specific version of their app for your shiny new iPad in a week.
Personally, I think Apple should do a big search and replace and swap "HD" with iPad. I agree with Joanna D that calling the iPad HD is BS.
That said, the few people who were whining that "...folks who bought the regular editions get the HD editions free. ...extra content ... pixels don't justify the extra dollars." clearly haven't had a project where they had to pay the 3D modelers, graphic designers, web designers and the marketing team additional funds to update things for a higher res version of a product. Oh, and any developers for additional dev work, too, regardless of the fact that they already spent time the past few months learning new SDK for the iPad and dealing with beta development tools just to get you a product on the day of launch. These people can't feed their families "with free". So get your wallets out, or don't use the software. It's that simple.

Note #2: 576p is considered HD in Australia only
I'll definitely be waiting for a universal form of applications to come out - my wife already complains that I buy too many apps. I won't be doubling that number.
March 25 2010 at 7:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been hoping that Plants Vs. Zombies made a more full-featured iPad game. I hope this adds in some of the game play from the desktop as well, otherwise it won't be much of a draw. Having played desktop and iPod Touch versions, I find the touch interface much better for gameplay, so hopefully they will improve upon the iPod/iPhone version to make the iPad version at least as good, maybe better, than the desktop.
March 25 2010 at 6:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe only reason they call it "HD", is because HD sells, remember we are in the era of "High Def", so they are inappropiately calling everything new HD... It's just a marketing term, likeothers have suggested, now we gotta be extra careful what apps to buy on one side or another...
March 25 2010 at 5:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply576p is still considered HD (704x576) - so technically the iPad is HD
March 25 2010 at 5:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBrushes is called Brushes "iPad Edition" not HD. I agree with Joanna, this HD labeling is just confusing and silly. Why can't everything be the iPad Edition.
March 25 2010 at 4:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApparently HD means "made for iPad". I'm guessing pricing for iPad apps will be higher than those for iPod/iPhone apps as well. Maybe something like $2.99 for iPod, $4.99 for iPad. Yes, choose wisely.
BTW, there will be no "Universal Apps" per se, it's iPod or iPad, but only low res iPod version will play on both.
Incorrect. There will definitely be universal appications you can buy with one purchase. Here's one: http://blog.instapaper.com/post/469281634
I expect this to become the norm after the launch hype dies down. People simply aren't going to pay twice for the same damn thing every time, and making a choice between one or the other is brutally annoying. Developers will learn this and whoever puts out the universal version in any category is going to clean up, forcing everyone else to follow. People aren't dumb.
Thanks for the clarification Steve. Good to know.
March 25 2010 at 5:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis makes me nervous. Should I be expecting to have to repurchase nearly my entire app library for the iPad? I'll say this: I'm going to be much more likely to support developers utilizing the "universal app" method if only because it may not be economically feasible not to. Or, if the app is split like this, I will have to carefully consider whether I want any particular app on my iPhone, iPad or both, and way the feature differentiation, before making any purchase.
March 25 2010 at 4:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe market is wide open right now for the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad development of apps now... until things settle in, be prepared to pay as much as the developers are demanding... it'll settle down in about 3 months after launch.
March 25 2010 at 4:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUnless these "HD" versions offer something unique in terms of gameplay, I can't see forking over another $5-10 to play the same game I already bought on a higher screen in "HD".
