Amazon sets up placeholder for the iPad

9to5Mac points to an Amazon placeholder that suggests Amazon is indeed preparing for sales of the iPad. The placeholder lists all six models of the iPad. Currently Amazon customers cannot order the device, but may be notified via email when the iPad is ready for order. The placeholder site states that the iPad can be shipped only within the U.S. (sorry overseas readers) and lists no date of availability. The placeholder page currently lists four reviews from people who have never touched the device.

Though the iPad competes directly with the Kindle, it makes perfect sense for Amazon to sell the device. The iPad is sure to be one of the hottest tech devices this year and will no doubt top Amazon's Bestsellers in Computer & Accessories list later in 2010. Besides revenue from the hardware, Amazon expects to profit from the iPad by selling its Kindle books through a dedicated iPad Kindle app. The more iPads sold, the greater potential revenue Amazon can achieve. Amazon also unveiled its Kindle for Mac desktop app a little over a week ago.

A week or so ago, at the placeholders you could check for alternative vendors who were eBay types listing prices $200 above MSRP.

I can only presume they were saving places in line at local stores to fill "pre-orders".

I suspect the Kindle will make a swift but graceful exit from the marketplace by year's end...

you're kidding right??

ipad is not an ebook reader, it's a tablet that will have ebook software.

kindle is an ebook reader.

apples and oranges.

No, not kidding at all. Why pay $299 for a device that does exactly one thing well vs. $499 for a device that arguably does that thing better- i.e. full color and sound- plus a ton of other stuff. If you honestly thing that Kindle's sales aren't about to nosedive due to iPad maybe you haven't been paying attention to all those now non-existent iPod-like music players that once competed with Apple. Same idea...

It makes sense for Amazon to sell the iPad, Kindle competitor or not. Remember, Amazon doesn't specifically want to be in the hardware business. They want to sell books, and they want to sell e-books. Since there weren't any particularly good e-book readers out there, they decided to make one--same way that Google only made Chrome because they wanted to make sure there's a really great platform to run their web-based apps.

Amazon has had this at least since March 12 when I first checked it. I even signed up for email notice when available but haven't gotten any word.

Why wouldn't they sell it. They sell every other apple products. I'm glad that they are since i can save a little money by not paying for sales tax.
