New iPad pre-orders will not ship until April 12
Several readers have notified us that the date for iPad pre-orders has been shifted back to April 12th, according to Apple's website. It is important to note that people who have pre-ordered before today can still expect to get their iPads on April 3rd. Those pre-ordering today & going forward should not expect the pre-orders to arrive before April 12th. The change in the pre-order shipping status suggests that Apple has completely sold out of the original online allotment of WiFi iPads. 3G iPad models still list a shipping date of "late April."
Yesterday Philip Elmer-DeWitt reported that iPad pre-orders have topped 240,000 units, not including in-store reservations.

The same thing happened with the 3G.. now people who preordered it after April 20 won't get it until a week AFTER the 3G iPad goes on sale, on May 7.

I had a friend who used to work for Apple he said to me that Apple's culture is very secretive. In fact, he learns about what products that Apple releases on the same day that the general public does if he isn't working on them. Plus, there are 60 hour work weeks, below par pay, and little opportunity for advancement. However, on the plus side, Apple does have a fairly relaxed work culture (albeit very secretive and with poor communication between departments) and Apple tries very hard to instill the idea that people who work for Apple are working on something truly special (which many of their employees believe). It works and many of them believe that Linux, Windows, Solaris, and Android, along with any competitors don't produce things as good as Apple ever could.
This april 12 pre-order halting is nothing more than just a hype to make people think that the ipad tablet is 'highly-in-demand'
Sadly, the general public sometimes believes this as well.

the article is a tad off. it claims that folks won't get orders placed now until after the 12th which is NOT what the site says. 'ships by' means the 12th is the last date it could go out. It's possible that it could go out on the 3rd and you get it the 5th - 7th. Just you should not expect to get it on the 3rd for sure.
March 27 2010 at 6:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDamn, am I lucky! I bought mine last night and it says it's shipping April 3rd - less than one day before this delivery date change!
March 27 2010 at 6:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple has already charged me for the 3G iPad.
March 27 2010 at 3:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm glad I got my reservation in early. I can't trust delivery around here on week-days, let alone a Saturday. I'll join the party in front of the Apple Store at Crocker Park to wait for the doors to open. Not that I think I need to show up early to get it. It is reserved after all, but hey, it's fun. Besides, I have tons of running around to do on Saturday before we had out of town to see my Step-Son for Easter
March 27 2010 at 1:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis makes me want 3G instead. If you can wait few more weeks, you get much more powerful ipad. Why not wait for product you've been waiting for do long ?
March 27 2010 at 11:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBecause the 3G one also costs quite a bit more. And for those occasions I want to access the internet when I can't get Wifi (meaning I'm not at home, work, at a friends' or family member's house, or most businesses), I've still got my trusty iPhone.

March 27 2010 at 11:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had a feeling this would happen based on the pre-order process with the iPhone 3GS, so I placed my pre-order yesterday to secure delivery on April 3rd.
My guess is that shipping notifications will start going out on Monday, and the devices will be shipped from China and will sit in a FedEx warehouse until Friday when they will be released for Saturday delivery.
yep, they'll enter customs in Alaska and disappaear until they're "out for delivery" on the 3rd.
can't wait to see reviews once they hit the shelves
what i've seen and heard regarding apps is promising as well (they're what's going to sell it .. I think we've seen the end of the .99 app too)
i wonder if there's going to be ANY sort of line @ the stores. i'd be surprised since most people see the ipad as "just a big ipod" wonder the Best Buy will sell out.
In store pickup reservation has also been removed as an option.
