James Cameron says watching films on an iPhone is "dumb"
So how should we watch Avatar according to the "King of the World?" He wants us to shell out for the Blu-ray 3D version coming out in November 2010, and then, "If you're going to go 3D, go big. Get the biggest set you can, and then sit as close as you can stand. That's my advice. Get the coffee table out of the way and slide the couch over, right in front of the TV." Right.
Cameron isn't the first director to express his disdain for the iPhone's 480 x 320 pixel, 3.5 inch screen. A couple years ago, David Lynch ranted about the iPhone with even harsher words than Cameron, saying, "Now if you're playing the movie on a telephone, you will never in a trillion years experience the film. You'll think you have experienced it, but you'll be cheated. It's such a sadness that you think you've seen a film on your f---ing telephone. Get real!"
I think what both of these directors are overlooking is that watching films on an iPhone is a supplement to watching them on a larger screen, not areplacement. No, you won't be able to see every lovingly-crafted CGI pixel ofAvatar's Pandora on the iPhone's comparatively tiny screen, nor will Lynch's surreal films pack the same visual impact they would on a 1080p HDTV. But I can't take my 32" LCD TV with me on a camping trip, or on a lengthy car ride, or on a 747 flying across the Pacific Ocean.
Watching films on a portable device like an iPhone, iPad, or laptop computer is about the convenience of being able to watch a film on your own terms, anywhere you want, any time you want. It's not about replacing the experience of your multi-thousand dollar home theatre system, assuming you even have one.
When Avatar comes out on Blu-ray, I will eventually buy it. But I'll be looking for the version that includes an iTunes-compatible digital copy, and if I feel like it, I will watch it on my iPhone -- because it's up to me to decide how I consume my media, not the film's director.

At a press conference where he spoke about the April release of the Blu-ray edition of his latest film, James Cameron said watching Avatar...

Kind of a dumb article, but notice how revealing Cameron is-- "especially if they're paying for it" seems to belie his sense of artistic outrage. On the other side of the argument, how watching a film on a tiny screen 'supplements' the big screen version is beyond me⦠unless you're memorizing dialogue. I really want to go out to the great outdoors on a camping trip and â¦watch movies. Not. I guess the iPhone is just an interim measure until they perfect affordable projection glasses or a chip in your head, so you don't have to experience the real world at all once you've left the theater.

If it ain't live, the way the musicians intended it, you're missing out. Worthless. Destroy all your CDs, mp3s, and records now. And those e-books. If it ain't on vellum bound in leather, it's not a real book!

March 29 2010 at 3:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe only videos I have on my iPod touch are either music videos to listen to in the car or the occasional viral video that I want to quickly show somebody, which are usually low enough quality that viewing it on a computer screen would be even more painful. I've tried viewing movies on the iPod, but I found that because of the rounded edges it would slip when I would try to stand it up and holding it for 90 minutes gets a little tiring.
But then again, I'm not much of a moviephile. I definitely could not justify shelling out several thousand dollars for an HD Blu-Ray 3D experience set. I'm more than content with my four year old HDTV and its similarly aged Philips DVD player. HD is gorgeous, but its not my cup of tea.
I think it DUMB to watch any James Cameron flick

March 29 2010 at 11:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat James Cameron's quote says is that watching HIS movies, specifcally Avatar, on a phone would be dumb [since it's mostly eye-candy not brain-candy]
People watch many different kinds of movies. They may be fewer and further between but there are still "brain-candy" movies that don't lose anything on a tiny screen.
What an odd remark for anyone to make. It's not like I sit at home and watch movies on my iPhone. It's more like I'm on an airplane on my way to Asia, it's a long flight and I've decided that I want to watch a movie I have stored on my iPhone to take away some of the boredom of the long flight. But I won't go out of my way to load Avatar on my iPhone just so I can watch it in all its 3D glory. I mean, really!
